On it's own probably no. But if your set has a scart socket it would be possible with a Saorview approved set top box. The only thing is you lose HD clarity on RTE 2 but the reception would be brilliant.

I'm being sarcastic towards that letter. :P

Just a question: my parents have a non-saorview TV hooked up to a free to air satellite box that has numerous channels, non-subscription. The receive analogue RTE etc using rabbit ears on the roof. A local "expert" quoted them nearly 200euro in order to make the switch to saorview: to me this is outragoeus since the official documentation said that either a new TV (plus aeriel) from 120e or else a set-top box for 60e would do the trick. There have been no reception problems up to now, it just seems like this is too much money. Any advice???

Get the €60 Saorview STB and connect the aerial, if it works then the aerial is fine. Argos do an Alba Saorview box for €60.

Do they currently receive analogue TV3 via the aerial?

If they have good analogue reception of all the Irish channels, they should only need to get a Saorview receiver, no need to involve any "experts".

It's possible you were being quoted for a combo box which you don't need if you already have FTA.

Yes and the reception is good. It just seems convoluted, having to buy another new aeriel: we already have an aerial AND satellite dish. Why should it be 200e for something simple?

 WOW a Fergie 150 is a "FreeSat " combo! I must rush out and order a few hundred.
How do these people get away with this nonsense?

If the aerial receives TV3 it should be OK for Saorview, just get the Saorview box yourself - plug and play - job done. Lots of cowboys out there looking to upgrade viewers aerials to "digital aerials".
