    Hi folks,
I am doing some Research into the thousands of "forgotten" Masonic gravestones which are to be found in both C of I and, believe it or not Catholic cemeteries around the country. Would you mind letting me know if you come across one as I would like to document it.

    Thanks.

Masonic headstones are in the shape if an Obelisk.
Symbols include Square and compass, the G denotes a Past Master.
Skull and bones, working tools, Judean/Christian symbols.

You may find an Obelisk in the yard the Shopping center of CornMarket St. in Cork city center. There against wall is an Obelisk head stone.
Please find the Masonic Hall in Cork city on a Friday morning between 10 and 11:30 for morning coffee. If you really want it you will find it. There may be a few people who might help you. Any member of the public is welcome to coffee morning and get a tour. The Triskel Art Museum/Christchurch in Cork maybe worth a visit. Note the modest man and the arrangement of legs and count his ribs. also visit the crypt.

ST Michans in Dublin would be worth a visit. Remember all Templars were crusaders but not all crusaders were templars. Find Strongbow in Christchurch in Dublin.

You do know that Daniel O Connell was a 33rd Degree (Top dog to the uninitiated) as well as many of the 1798 leaders? I believe you have to request a masonic funeral while you are in the peak of your health from your head of lodge in writing and write it into your will. I have never been to one.

PM me with any more detailed questions

    Hi,
Thank you for your help. But just to correct, the G in the centre of the square and compass denotes The Grand Architect. And just to get back on topic,
If anyone has seen any unusual symbols on headstones please post them here and I will confirm whether they are Masonic or indeed from one of the side orders.
If you would like an example, a walk around the outside of St Nicholas church in Galway will shed some light.
    Thanks again,
    H

Yes the G alone does denote the Grand Architect, but a Square and compass symbol with the G denotes Past Master, the Square and compass without the G denotes only Master Mason.

Also in cork find the graveyard in St Annes CoI or more commonly known as Shandon bells on the northside of the city center. I believe the name is Wyse. I met a relation of theirs and claim to be descended from one of Napoleans Generals.

Ok. For fear of being too pedantic and as I am a mason, here goes. Under the Irish Constitution, the G within the square and compass denotes a Mastermason. A Past Masters Jewel is totally different and refers to Past Worshipful Master. Or WM.
    Now back on topic please.
There are other threads available elsewhere to discuss the nuances of the Craft...

Good stuff, thanks. There are actually two pyramids in Maudlins Cemetry Mass complete with Royal Arch masons marks.

I also found two Templar graves near the old preceptory in Templetown...a templar sword with the agnus dei at the bottom.

Not exactly a grave but this compass & set square image is situated at the right hand side of the alter at St Michaels Church Glasthule. I am not too sure of the history of it.
