Im waiting to spray off a field for reseeding, i grazed it, then topped it tight 9 days ago now its green again but no major growth on it ... should i give it another week to get more foliage on there to get a better kill with the round up?

few docks, rushes, odd buttercup(got ground lime in Spring 2.5t/acre) but apart from that just old meadow sward/clover that id like to kill off?

would love to do it sun/mon but half thinking i should wait for more weeds etc to rear their heads??:confused:

If its green and in the growth stage it will absorob the roundup no bother. I did sne last year. 100% kill off.
    Go for it!

Cheers fella, I'll try and get out on it today or tomorrow .. I've never reseeded before ... I'm a bit apprehensive about letting the cows graze off the burnt butt of grass too ... Anyone ever experience any bother ? I might just give it 14 days and harrow the life out of it

    Advice needed.

As said I new to reseeding ... Sprayed it off last Friday , gave it 7 days and cows into it.. They werent overly impressed with the dry yellow grass but left them in it for 24 hrs.

Now that's 8 days and I tried the chain Harrow tonight there for a few passes and it did damn all indentation to it even with pallet and 3 blocks on top...

Do I leave it more than 8 days for grass roots to die to come out easier??!!

Field very dry maybe rain that is coning will soften it for pulling out the dead grass?!

You left it too long after spraying to let cattle in I sprayed one early last week grass was tuning after two days and just let them in. If they were not milking cows you should have left them in it for longer after 3-4 days they would eat is down.

If there is alot of grass try topping or let cattle in again loads of them

After that can you get a disc harrow to break it up get him to disc it all once and thrn to disc slightly off the orginal run.

    Hi Pudsey,

No grass much on it, was topped tight before spraying off... So at 8 days it's as dead as its going to be ?!

Roundup needs 21 days in order to give a full kill down to the roots

Good stuff jack, I'm struggling with it ... It's yellow but not budging ... I'll have to sit it out as have no choice as discing or powerharrowing is not an option as no one near me has one!!

21 days this Friday coming and it's orange/rotten and dead but chain harrow isn't the tool to rip it out... Disc harrow or power harrow would be ideal but neither in the area.

Next time I'd wait between myself and neighbour and hire in power harrow as it would avoid also waiting the 21-30 days to wait for grass roots to die away enough to be ripped out ... Few little green bits of clover seem to be making a come back ... Lucky this was a small field trial or I'd be screwed

Any advice lads? Id hate to plough it, I may wait until weekend to dry out a bit and get tractor and ridiculous amount of weight onto chain harrow to dig in deeper ... It's only sliding over the top at the moment

Is it a chain harrow with a frame around it? how deep are the tines ? our old one has no frame and even without weight it will rip the grass out of it i'd imagine if i put weight on it it would scratch the ground real well,
i presume your plan was to spread the seed on yourself and roll in,
maybe you might have to get someone with a stitcher to sow it

Could you get your hands on a heavier harrow? Not a power harrow now, I think they were called triple K harrows... I used one before to redden a bit of ground.
That might redden it to start, and allow the chain harrow to bite a bit

    Hi John,

I used one of those harrows .. In uk, I think they call them spring tine harrows, I know a good friend has one of those but I bet the points on it are shot.

If it got one good ripping with that I'd manage the chain Harrow thereafter.

I'll try him tomorrow , failing that I'm forced with no other option but to get ESB poles and additional weights onto my 6ft chain harrow ( no frame) and get tractor to pull it !!

Stitcher would be the job alright but again no big machinery near me

This is exactly the harrow i collected this evening, its funny how its almost identical to the picture you posted!

Have to grind off three bolts in the morning that are ceased and replace them as 3 tines are loose but apart from that she perfect:):D
