Cruagh Cemetery

I visited Cruagh Cemetery, not far from Rockbrook, recently. The graveyard has an old and a new section. The old section has graves from about 1700 - 1930.

However, I'm quite puzzled about the state of this old section. Many of the headstones are broken, almost as if someone had smashed them with a sledgehammer. More curious still is the unusual state of the ground, looking as if there had been an earthquake or some similar upheaval.

Would anyone have any knowledge about what happened here to make the ground so disturbed and untidy looking?

    Thanks. :)
