Sorry mods,i dobt know if this is the right forum, please to correct one if needed

    Hey guys,

Simple question really, with the Digital switch over happening my current tv wont pick up any stations and I was wondering if I need a tv license for it,iv heard in the past of a loop hole were if your take out your tvs receiver you dont need a license as it cant pick up channels and my tv will now effectively be like that now with the switch over.

So do I still need need on if I dont upgrade or supply to sky or upc?

    Thanks

    Yes.

Simple answer is yes, you do need a licence.
When the analogue television service is switched off your analogue television set will need a set-top box to receive digital television. Your analogue television set, with or without a set-top box, will still require a television licence.

Thanks for the reply but you can understand where im coming from, I know it pays for radio's aswell but just for arguments sake say I dont have one either, why should I pay for a broadcasting service I cant avail of,if I have a car that sits in my drive and dont use it I dont have to pay road tax so why do I have to pay for the license?

They are attempting to change the law on car tax too. Where you have a car you will have to tax it regardless of whether it is 'off the road' or not

Are people actively searching for threads with the word 'licence' or 'tax' or did you just happen to be browsing the terrestrial tv forum?

    No you dont.

Your car can be off the road and not taxed.

No they're not and no it wont. Whats being looked at, in theory as nothing has been decided beyond a minister of some sort givign a sound bite to a radio or newspaper once, is a SORN system like the UK, where you declare your car off the road in advance, rathe rthan after the fact like now.

There's a dedicated tv licence thread here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055794011

It's not even supposed to be mentioned in this forum as it's a non-platform-specific subject.

Did I not hear somewhere that they are trying to abolish the TV license and bring in a new system for your PC and TV?

Actually, no, not if it isn't in use. You get a Garda to certify the period if you subsequently want to put it in use.

Since TVs are easily connected and can work even with only 6" of wire in Aerial socket and don't get stopped by Garda checkpoints, they are only deemed out of use if in an inaccessible place with mains lead cut off, even then they could accuse you of doing that when you saw them coming. A TV in the premises is deemed to be in use.

Yep even if you have a TV in the attic you still need to pay the license.

Off topic, but haven't they changed the rules so you have to get periods of non-use certified in advance - because the system was being abused..
