Advice re Bike Warranty

    Hi,

I am looking for advice re Bike Warranty and what I should expect from a bike shop.

I bought a Felt hybrid bike with an internal 3 speed hub gear system from a well known west Dublin Triathlon bike store in June 2011, total cost was about 800 Euro including a tyres upgrade, carrier etc.
I brought the bike back to the shop for servicing twice, once about 3 months after purchase and then again in March of this year, on both occasions I mentioned to the workshop that there was noise coming from the gears area and that I thought it was the gear hub or the pedal-bracket. On the 2nd occasion I was quite adamant about this with the workshop but on both occasions I was told there was no problem with the gear hub or bracket, that they had tightened a few things up and that all was well. In fairness the bike was working fine when I got it back. Then in early July the gear hub failed completely, to the point where I could not ride the bike. At this point it was just over 12 months since I purchased the bike, so it was out of warranty by a few weeks only. I brought the bike back to the shop and they told me that the gear hub would have to be replaced, but that the 1 year manufacturer's warranty was up so I would have to purchase the new part at a cost of 150 Euro. I made the point to the shop that the bike was only just out of warranty and made my point about the 2 services as described above. The shop then agreed to ask the manufacturer Felt whether they would replace the part under warranty however Felt refused on the basis that there was a lot of wear and tear on the bike. I use this bike to commute on good roads only, it has never been abused, I estimate that I have done 2600 miles on this bike over the year, these bikes are designed as city / commuter bikes. The shop have refused to make me any offer on this, my choice is pay for the replacement part or take my bike home in it's now unusable condition.

Is this normal and acceptable practice, has anyone had a similar experience, should I take this further?

If you don't get any satisfaction, take them to the small claims court.(€18)

Shocking service from Felt ... but even more disappointing is the service from the shop who don't appear to support your case to Felt in any way. Is this the well known shop based in Liffey Valley?
This lack of customer service makes me mad...

Goods must be fit for purpose even if the product is out of warranty by a few weeks... I'm sure someone will come along and refer you to legal stuff that you can use (I'm rubbish at that stuff .. and not much better at cycling :P )
