You really should add a nifty fifty to your kit
    the 1.8 is dirt cheap

If you can afford the 1.4 go for it
    you wont regret it :D

Very jealous, both of the NYC trip and 2 whole days to yourself while there. Sigh.

B&H photographic are in NYC and you can probably pick up lenses fairly cheaply. Worth going in just to look around. They close on jewish holidays so check the website before spending time going there. The 24-105F4L is a fantastic carry round lens, covers nearly all situations and is a good buy, but is $$. I'd second the suggestion of the 50mm 1.8 too.

Times Sq at night, Grand Central, great scope for street esp a little off the beaten track, guggenheim interior, central park, great airplane shots on that aircraft carrier museum, if you have the $$ a helicopter ride might be worth it, statue of liberty, Empire state at night time etc etc

It'd be worth doing a search on NYC on flickr to catch other spots.

The 24-105F4L would be abit out of my price range, Plan to do all of the above however incl Heli ride Both day/night... I'd love something that would do wide lens but is there something out there affordable. as i said i'm not a pro by any means but NYC would be my fav city in the world and want to take advantage of being there with the opportunity of taking photo's . The F 1.8 is on my list to buy alright.

Don't come back without getting some shots from the Top of the Rock
try and go up just before dusk if possible to the get the best of both

when I was there I did the Empire State Building instead
    A regret!!

    I didn't have a decent camera back in 2005

go on flickriver.com put in New York (interesting) and enjoy :D

If I was going in the Morning another Lens that would be in the suitcase
    would be my Sigma "10-20"
a wide angle is a must in the big Apple
I am sure you would get a good deal on them in B&H

or adverts. I think I saw a 24-105 there for 700. You could always buy it and then flip it when you come back.

The 10-20 is excellent too for a crop sensor like the 550. Tend to run about 350-400 2ndhand from adverts.

Don't forget if you don't have a wide, you can always stitch them together really easily.

(price aside) I would recommend a sigma 30mm every single time over a 50mm on a crop sensor camera

If your planning on taking some pictures at night in the helie scrap it and use the cash to put towards a lens.

I have the 550 myself, great little camera. Get rid of your kit lens and you wont look back.

I might have a sigma 15-30mm for sale, if your keen pm me, Im looking to upgrade to the 16-35L.
