Download problems

When I try to download catalyst control center updates I get an "NSIS error".

It's happened with a few other downloads as well.

I've had intermittent blue screen problems (discussed in a thread on this forum here) with my computer and replaced my RAM with the hopes of fixing it.

I've read that NSIS errors can happen due to faulty hardware so it's possible that something else is wrong with my computer (motherboard or cpu or something).
First of all, I want to see if I can fix the problem with something less drastic.

I've tried emptying the cache. It didn't work.
Any other ideas?

Edit: I'm using Chrome.

NSIS is an installation system, usually errors associated with it are due to faulty download or memory issues, check your ram using memtest86+ and see if there are any RAM issues

It would be astronomically unlikely that I got a 3rd set of faulty RAM in a row.

A faulty memory bank/bios config isn't out of the question. I'm just pointing out CRC errors are common with faulty memory, regardless of the slot, module, config being the issue

So if at this stage I've all but ruled out memory, what would memtest tell me?
Or are there other tests more tailored towards mobo or CPU that I could try?

Test the hard disk as well, you could also copy the setup files onto a usb key and try them on another machine, to rule out network issues (some network adaptor drivers have been known to corrupt downloads)

I downloaded the CCC update on another computer and transferred it over using a USB. It installed fine.

So clearly my computer is where the fault lies.

Which broadband provider do you use? Do you use wired/wireless? It could be a driver issue on your computer causing the corruption or a service provider issue (mobile broadband "midband") don't tend to be that relyable for big downloads, a way around this issue can be using a download manager but not all sites support download managers

I use wired Eircom broadband. It's not great but it just about cuts it for gaming and so on.

But the other computer I used was on the same network anyway.
I had considered trying a download manager but I wouldn't really know what's reliable.

If you use Wifi on the other machine make sure your drivers for the wifi adaptor are up to date. A download manager you can try is FDM, it is decent. What browser are you using as well? I've found some browsers the internal download manager can be dodgy (particularly Chrome from expierience)

I downloaded the CCC update on my mother's laptop with Chrome and it worked fine.
I use Chrome as well but I've also tried downloading it with IE and it didn't work.

I tried that download manager and the same problem occurs.

My, admittedly uninformed, intuition would suggest that because it's not working so consistently that it's not a hardware problem but something else, maybe drivers? I would've thought that a hardware problem would lead to intermittent download problems rather than downloads never working.

I would say drivers also, check for an update for your wifi driver, also disable any firewall you have enabled. If you need help locating a new driver let us know the model number of the machine

But I don't use wifi.

The only anti-virus I use is MS Security Essentials and as far as I can tell it doesn't have a firewall or at least not one I can disable.

There's a seperate "Windows Firewall" in control panel.

Sorry about that, it could be your ethernet driver is dodgy. Windows firewall shouldn't cause any problems. Update your lan drivers and see if it helps. A dodgy hard disk could cause download corruption, have you checked the hard disk with a low level diagnostics?

It seems to happen when I save files to both my HDD's. It seems unlikely that both are damaged but I'll give it a whirl after I fix the drivers.

Some web browsers will save the download to a temporary directory in its install location first, then move the download to the other drive, I don't think firefox does this, so may be worth trying firefox and downloading to the other disk. I am not too familiar with chrome as I don't use it. Updating the lan driver is certainly worth trying.

I tried to update a thing called "Realtek PCIe gbe family controller" but it said it was up to date.

I'll set it to run "scan disk" or whatever it's called these days.
Edit: I scanned all the drives - they seemed ok.
