Audi A3 overheating! Need help

Alright folks, i own a 02 Audi A3 1.9 tdi sport with a 6 speed gearbox. Last week i noticed it was over heating badly (could only drive 7-9 miles before the gauge shot up and the warning light came on) So monday i took it into a local garage to see what the story was and on tues the guy phones back and tells me hes checked the thermostat the water pump and the radiator but they were all fine.

He went on to tell me that hes seen this before in another audi a3 and it turned out to be some sort of corrosion inside the engine and the only option would be to buy a new engine for the car. Now iv talked to another mechanic whos worked with all types of motors for 20 odd years and he says hes never heard tell of this situation with corrosion before.
So im just wondering if any of ye would be able to tell me have you heard of anything like this before cause the second guy i talked to was 99.9% sure its to do with the water pump.(To be honest the price of a new second hand engine and what it would cost to put the thing in is giving me nightmares)
Any input would be very much appreciated.

Sounds like the 'mechanic' who has the car now either hasn't a clue how to diagnose the problem or couldn't be bothered and has made up some random story to make his life easier.

My advice is to get it straight out of there and have it diagnosed properly.
