Tiling

Hi...I am currently re-doing my kitchen and will be tiling the floor. The existing floor is solid timber and I am wondering what is the best option for tiling down on this. Our tiler has suggested the following two options:
    - screwing down cement board onto the wood flooring, and tiling down on this using flexible adhesive
    or
    - using flexible matting attached by a lot of extra flexible adhesive underneath onto the solid wood flooring and above underneath tiles.

I have been into different shops looking for tiles and there seems to be different opinions on the above suggestions. Some say simply putting down marine ply and tiling down on this is enough.

Both options are expensive but would rather do it right to avoid tiles lifting/cracking.
Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

Just wondering how your kitchen joins other rooms? If you put down any board on top of current floor and then tile will that not leave you with a huge step to the next room of at least an inch?which will be unsightly and cause trips regularly? what is your timber floor fixed to underneath? is it floating or fixed to battens/joists?
