Why are bad habits so difficult to break?

I have noticed that some bad habits are so difficult to break, I am a 3rd student and for as long as I can remember since primary school I procrastinate, I am always battling to break the habit its endless.

Why is it so difficult? Is it laziness or is there an actual neurological reason?

    Anyone else?

You are going to have to be a bit more specific. What habits are you talking about?

I don't know, OP, I have had a bad attack of something like procrastination recently. I think it depends a bit on how you procrastinate. Are you doing other, useful, stuff or are you just messing around avoiding doing anything?

What are you avoiding at the moment? Finding a psychological reason for not doing it sounds like effective procrastination! How about making a very specific list of things to do, such as:

    Have lunch
    Wash up
    Take dog for a walk
    Make a cup of coffee
DO THING THAT IS BEING AVOIDED

Do not allow yourself to then 'just' phone someone, 'just' find some more interesting music to listen to while doing the avoided thing, 'just' check your emails, or anything else. Do it.

I used to procrastinate constantly before
How I got out of the habit was to make three lists of things to do

The first was goals for the month
At the start of each month I would make a list of what I would like to do/achieve for the month

Then I break these goals down into what needs to be done each week and then what needs to be done each day

On the list of what has to be done each day, the first thing to be done is what is the most important, no matter how boring or difficult this task is to complete I would tackle this first, if it was a big task I break it down into smaller sections to make it easier to complete

Another thing that I do is to take plenty of breaks, for every hour of completing a task I take a 10 minute break in order to refresh myself, in this time I can do whatever I want outside of the work that I enjoy doing, check emails, facebook etc but when I back working on the task I concentrate on what needs to be done first, not whats the easiest thing to be do first
