Wireless 'just went away' on Mint

I have a HP Pavillion tx1000 mini-laptop which has happily been running Mint 11 for the last 18 months or so. After a day or so of poking things at the beginning, I got the wireless up and running and since then it worked just fine.

    Until last week.

The wireless interface just went away and the OS doesn't see it any more. There is a hardware switch on the front of the laptop for turning wireless on and off, but it doesn't matter what state (blue or orange) it is set to - the OS still doesn't see it.

ifconfig just shows eth0 - the wired interface.
iwconfig shows no interfaces with wireless extensions.

I checked the BIOS and there's no option in there to enable or disable the card. I've just realised that I didn't check to see whether the physical card needs to be reseated - I will try that later when I'm at the machine.

I will wire it up and start with the googling and modprobing, but I thought I would check in here first to see if anyone had any suggestions about glaringly obvious things i have managed to overlook.

    lsusb?
    lspci?

    Thanks for the reminders.

lsusb shows I have a HP Wireless (Bluetooth & WLAN) Interface present.

Bluetooth appears to be present - or at least the little bluetooth icon shows up on the desktop. I have nothing to connect it to so I can't check. This would seem to indicate that the card is at least working.

lspci shows nothing relevant that I can see.

    Can you post it?
I want to check if someone reported regression on this type of wifi that you have.

Then we can check if the driver module has been loaded - not possible without knowing what hardware you have.

I just need to wire it up to the router and then will post it once I have that - thanks for your help.

My underlining of what I think is the relevant bit

Can you post dmesg as well?
And 'sudo lshw -C network' please.

This looks similar to your problems...
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11993022#post11993022

That USB ID (03f0:171d) seems to be with 2 different descriptions (bluetooth only - BCM2045 and bluetooth/wifi combined)

And 'sudo lshw -C network' please.

    @zagmund

We're you able to sort out your Wifi issues ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,501 ✭✭✭zagmund

    Nope, I'm still stumped.

I blew the machine away and installed Mint 13, but nothing changed. It's really weird. It's possible that one of the mini-zags did something, but they're not really IT literate so they certainly didn't go in and do any command line stuff to it.

The blue light shows up and bluetooth turns on and off according to the hardware switch on the device and it's an integrated WLAN/blue tooth card, so the card is working.

I've run out of ideas for the moment so I've just plugged in a long ethernet cable and am going back to old-skool technology for the moment.

I'm still open to suggestions if any has any.

They pulled loads of firmwares out of the last kernel revision.

They need now to be installed separately.

Google says your laptop has a BCM43xx chipset. so you will need to get it somehow onto the internet with a cable.

    run
    sudo apt-get update;sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer firmware-b43legacy-installer

This should install the drivers for a BCM43xx wifi chipset.

    if not then please
    sudo apt-get install lshw
    lshw -C network

and paste me here the output to see what chipset you really might have.

I've had a look at the output from lshw and there's nothing showing up that even looks remotely like a wireless card - it's all video, drives, CPU, memory, etc . . . It doesn't even make reference to the bluetooth.

Thanks for your help. Long story, but I have no screw drivers at all where I am at the moment, but once I get one I will take the card out and get the part number. That should help.

b43 certainly rings a bell from when I installed it originally. I remember bits about using fwcutter and b43 stuff, but to be honest the first set of things I did had no effect and I can't remember which bits did work a year or two ago.

    Thanks,

    z

what a mess that should work ..

I assume you have cinnamon running.
please use synaptic and search all packages which have anything to do with BCM43.

Install anything that sound like making sense ... you cant break more than it is if you ensure you don't uninstall anything.

If by any means that thing doesn't have the Broadcom chipset you might like to search for realtek firmware but then the laptop would be build totally out of standard.

    Meantime, 2.5 months later . . . I found a screw driver.

The card has just a few details on it -
    SPS# 407160-002
    AS# 395263-002
    CT: GB7C60CAFU4M39
Mac address - 001A73..... which shows it as a Gemtek address - http://hwaddress.com/mac/001A73-000000.html

From what I can tell, my situation is similar to this guy here - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11993022. Unfortunately there's no resolution to his problem in the thread.

I've more or less given up at this stage. I'm quite happy to install another distribution to see if that helps, but I've a funny feeling it won't.

Which distro are you using now?

Its strange how easy it is to get wifi working on linux mint 13.. i have an external wifi adapter that i could never get to work with any linux distros, but i installed mint 13 a few days ago and i just needed to put a few commands in the terminal and it worked.. i was surprised that it worked straight away, but i was even more surprised that it worked MUCH better than it did in windows.

    Final update.

It seems the laptop was the problem. The card worked in other machines and other cards which worked in other machines failed to even be detected in the Pavillion.

I don't know whether there was some low level issue which meant that the card was no longer detected via the motherboard, or whether the motherboard was just broken.

I took the card out, installed it into a HP 6510b which I re-purposed from work and it was detected. I just needed to install the B43-firmware stuff, and it came up straight away as soon as the firmware was loaded up. I put it back in the Pavillion and it didn't show up anywhere.

Thanks for all the help. At this stage I'm just going to retire the Pavillion.

[edit] in response to above post - Mint 13
