Vodafone taking 99cents a day out of credit

I've got my new phone about 2/3 weeks now and every day I am charged 99 cents, even without using the internet. My old phone (also with Vodafone) didn't charge me anything for the internet unless I was actually on it, but now this phone is using 99 cents a day of my credit even though I've had it mostly switched off and not using the internet. I top up with 20E a month, which is loads, I don't want to go 30E a month for free internet. Is there another way around this? or do I put up with almost 7E a week out of my credit for something I don't use?!

It must be the background apps using your internet. Not sure be what phone you have but if you get an app called imago count on iPhone and Android you can control all the unauthorized internet access

You could also try making a new internet profile with made up figure so your phone used them instead and so can't access the internet.

Cheers for that, went to local Vodafone store and they said same thing, have to manually switch off unwanted apps every day.

Wow, that could have been written by me! I feel a bit naive but it's my first smart phone and I had no idea that this is how they worked or I would have thought twice about getting one :o

What type of phone is it? Just turn off mobile data and it won't happen at all

It's the new Huawei G300 Ascend phone. Where do I turn off mobile data or where would it normally be?

I can attest to this working. However, you cannot access the internet with mobile data turned off

    Are you sure about that?

Yeah, turning mobile data off would be great but I told the woman in the Vodafone shop that I still want to access my Gmail and perhaps Facebook but she said I would have to constantly turn all other apps off manually. Is there a way around this?!

If you tap the power button, wil it give you an option to change the "Data Network Mode" - Samsung's have this.

If not, it'll be in settings, and then connection settings.

    Except through Wifi :)

Ok thanks, had a look through the settings and there is no option for Connection settings or anything that says 'mobile data', I'll have another look though...

Settings -> Wireless and networks -> Mobile networks -> Data enabled checkbox
    On my phone anyway.

Hopefully that helps. Otherwise, you'll have to go and find the apps which cause the problem. Probably weather widgets, or email set to automatically refresh, but it could be any app. If you're paying €20 a month already, a rolling 1 month bill pay contract with inclusive data may be worth looking at.

Thanks for that and all the help! I think the weather widget is one of the main culprits alright  I might look in to that bill pay contract instead also

Accessing either Gmail or Facebook will incur the 99c charge as you are still accessing mobile data.

You can turn it back on to check your email (You'll be charged 99c for that day though, so you might as well use it for the rest of the day if you do it once) or else just check your mail when you're at a wifi spot.
If you really want to use a smartphone though, you can't be thinking about the data costs, it just wrecks the experience. Just get the phone unlocked and pick up a Three sim card, it includes unlimited mobile data.

I've turned the data off for now and will see how that fairs out but You're totally right, when i realised I was charged 7E a week for little usage, I was shocked and it detracted from my first smartphone experience and what a great phone the Huawei is! :o

Yeah turn off synch so that you're in charge of when to check your gmail and Facebook. But if you get the app Onavo from the app store, you can restrict access to the apps so that they work by wifi only.

But you're better off turning off your data connection until you want to use it for Facebook and gmail, then off again when you don't?

Yeah I'm going to try this and see how it goes!
