Which engine oil should I use in a 2005 Honda Accord 2L Petrol. Reason for asking is that a friend advised me to use full synthetic oil?

It'll usually give the specs that the oil needs to meet in the manual, altho for some cars some people will say that the original spec in the manual was not good enough for long term use.

It's the same engine (ish) as the Honda CRV, as I recall the detail on what oil to use is pretty vague - 5w30 semi synthetic would do you if I'm remembering the CRV manual correctly.

10W40 Semi-Synth, save your money. Apparently you could also use 0w20! But seems a little thin to me, esp in an older car.

Honda engines are designed for low viscosity oils such as 0w-20 or 0w-30 as the i-VTEC needs "thin" oil to operate properly. Go for a quality full synthetic as they are of better quality and do not shear so quickly as semi-synthetics. It is not true the engine needs thicker oil as miles go by. The oil needs to be thin enough to lubricate the engine from the moment your turn the ignition but strong enough to ensure the engine is protected under the given load. High viscosity oils not necessarily protect the engine better than low viscosity oils - it is all about the film strength not how thick the oil is. Do not try to save up 20 quid by servicing your car with a wrong grade oil - silly thing to do.

Use the 0-30 or 0-40 fully synthetic.

Then why does the iVTEC engine come from the factory with 10w40 and is recommended? Honda must have it all wrong ..

The manual for the Honda CRV from that year (iVTEC) is really vague in terms of oil, I'm not sure it mentions any ACEA specs and seems to indicate anything from 0w20 to 15w40 will cover Irish temperatures. Can't find an online version of the european manual. (Maybe I'm misrembering it) Only the yank one which just has API certified 5w20 for all conditions.

Ya, they don't seem to all that picky about oil, I'd be inclined to use reasonable oil and change it often rather than super-duper oil left there for 2years or 15k or longer.
