Im just back from a short trip to Waterford and i have to say that i had an enjoyable time and the hotel was great.I loved the view of the river.Waterford is one of irelands most underrated cities i find it's shopping facilities to be more than adequate and for a small city there's a great selection of pubs and restaurants.I also like the way it's a port city like Cork as far as im concerned Waterford is way better than the overhyped Galway.Galway is just a town with a little green and traffic congestion. In fact i also prefer it to Dublin actually it's now my second favourite irish city after Cork but how come im one of a very few amount of people that recognise Waterford as a proper city and one of irelands treasures. How come the vast majority of people in this country see Waterford the same way they see Clonmel in other words how come people compare Waterford to others provincial towns? How come people compare a place like Galway to cities like Cork and Dublin!I also loved walking around the waterfront and just relaxing around there. The people are so friendly and that was even more impressive when you take into account that this was the aftermath of Corks win over Waterford.:pac:The negatives and to be fair they were very few.

1The view from my hotel room window of a North Waterford flag flying from a house over in the ferrybank.:pac:
2There was a gang of individuals wearing tracksuits and baseball hats exchanging verbals with another group of similarly dressed individuals on Michael Street or was it Broad Steet. It was outside Sherwoods electrical anyway. They were just loitering around creating a menacing atmosphere in the middle of the afternoon. Waterford is as bad as Langerland when it comes to skangers anyway but i never noticed anything like that in Langerland!
3I walked up to Ballybricken green. There was a drunken brawl on the green with some guards trying to bring it under control. There was also a few skinheads drinking on a bench as well as a lot of dodgy individuals loitering around.I thought i was in Sherrif Street or Rialto in Dublin instead of Waterford!Mind you i was told later that there was someone seriously assaulted and mugged by junkies in Ballybricken a few weeks ago.
4The lower end of Georges Street or O'Connell Street to be excact. Is in a very run down state. If you put a good few more pubs shops and restaurants into that street you would have quite a lively area.Instead you have bit of a wasteland.

All in all despite the inferiority complex from some of the locals and a lack of investment Waterfords qualities shine through.By inferiority complex i mean they way certain people seem obsessed with knocking the place into submission.Such an attitude is very rare both in Cork and the other cities. How come no one is able to sell Waterford as a destination?Just look at how that overgrown village Galway markets itself!

Ive always thought Waterford is a very nice unique city in Ireland. With its huge river, docks and big cliffs overlooking the town I just think its a lot different than anywhere else.
It has so much potential but with the state of the economy the city is suffering greatly, with A LOT of shops closed down, the word ghost town is mentioned a lot.
Would that flag in Ferrybank you're referring to be the abandoned Ard Ri hotel? Thats another dire part about the city. They really need to clean up that part of the city and make it look nice. (no kilkenny jokes please :pac:).

What else did you do in Waterford OP? did you see the county or anything? I think John Roberts Square and the peoples park are very nice area's. Lower O'connel st and Ballybriken are places that I would probably tell a tourist to avoid because of how run down they kinda look, but I dont think I've ever felt particularly unsafe in them. Ooh I also love taking a walk on the quays :D

Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed your time there. I agree, it is highly underrated.

I never said i felt unsafe in O'Connell Street.I just said that it's a shame a big long street like that is left neglected. As for Ballybricken i stand by what i said but that was in my very few complaints section!I know county waterford very well (well as far as Dungarvan anyway) but this was my first time in the city in years and the Kilkenny flag was flying from someones house over in ferrybank. The part of it that's in Waterford.:pac:

Ah you get that a lot. I used to live in ferrybank and it was pretty 50/50 from what I remember. Never saw it as a problem really.

For someone who had just a short trip to Waterford you seem to be very familiar with all the street names.

    More than adequate?

That's going on the tourism ads!

"Come to Waterford, our facilities are more than adequate"

I guess that's the benefit of an actual map and google maps!I always like to try and learn the layout and geography of my destination before i go to it.

haha I was thinking the same myself.

Lol! But it does bring up some interesting points. Having spoken to someone (not from here) who took a train to Waterford recently this was their experience:

Disembarked. Little or no advertising promoting the City. Crossed four lanes of traffic to get across the road at the Station. This brought them to the wrong side of the bridge.

Cross again at Treacys. No signs except one for "Waterford Shopping Centre" pointing up Summer Hill. Get to the to of Summerhill and..........nothing.

And on and on and on........................and this from a visitor. It made me cringe TBH.:(

A quay which is being decimated by putting a roundabout in the wrong place - it should be at the end of Conduit Lane.

Being from here I never really thought about it that much but yeah, Waterford doesnt really make much sense at all.
That roundybout their putting in, I have no idea how the fluck they thought that would be a good idea.

Im delighted theyre going in & the quay being reduced to single lanes. Very few people seem to know that 2 lanes doesnt mean balance on the line in the middle or the left lane isnt a parking bay

The roundyabout is there , because when you exit the clock tower car-park , there is a sign to say '' No right turn ''

Therefore you must turn left ...........so how far do you have to go , before you can do u-turn ( if you really wanted to turn right exiting this car-park )

Now the roundy-about solves this for me anyway .

Dunno, I'm not from here originally (being an Aussie). I spend much time travelling and gigging around Europe and probably go out more in Dublin than in Waterford for the techno and stuff. I reckon it's an easy enough place to live. Everything within walking distance, never get any hassle and have by and large found folks to be friendly and welcoming. I'd like to move back to Oz once my kids are independent but that's mostly because I thrive in the sun. In the absence of sunshine Waterford is pretty OK as far as I can see. Like, any stuff about it being dangerous doesn't ring true for me anyway. Being a guy in my early 50's I'd have to say that the younger generation of Waterford people I meet in the music scene are as cool as if not better than any anywhere.

Ive just started drivin in Waterford and the one major discrepency ive noticed is your WHOLE inner town centre is bypassed, its just one major roundabout,u can pass thru but there is no major parking apart from Dunnes which does lead you to city square thats a bonus, you fell into the same trap as Grafton street and henry street by cobbling your busiest shooping areas you miss outon the road traffic ......but i will say bein a biker havin a one way system is very handy ....but the new roundabout is a menace its a bottle neck ....
