Brake Pad Manufacturers

Not sure if this is the right place to put this, but the GTI is in need of a service, and brake pads are due as well.

I got a quote from the main VW dealer and it came in at €82 for fronts, and €60 for rear. Looking online (micksgarage, there are 3 brands). ABS, Mintex and Quinton Hazel. I have heard of Mintex, and the most expensive ones on there are €57.50 for fronts and €20 for rear. Quite the difference!

Looking at maybe ordering these tonight/tomorrow. Would anyone have any other suggestions re sourcing good pads?

I got genuine discs and pads for my audi quite reasonably priced off them although delivery is sloooooow.

Ferodo would be a well-known brand too, probably available from your local motor factors.

I think textar make the oe pads for vw.

I replaced oe pads with pagids from gsf and had no problems, they were rear pads.

Mintex is a fairly good brand above OEM quality but not sport pads by any means. The other two are just straight OEM replacement brands.
For the quote you got, premium and sport pads are available like EBC yellow or Ferodo as someone already mentioned. Braking performance will be absolutely great compared to OEM pads.(or even Mintex)

Would the ebc yellow stuff have any downside? Like squeal or anything? Also are they ok with oem discs or are they for use with uprated discs etc? Sorry just curious!

I have EBC Yellow Stuff on my Audi Allroad and find them a major improvement on OEM. I was told that breaking wouldn't be great from cold, but that's not an issue.

I would definitely recommend them.

They don't per se. However, car manufacturers don't make most of the components, they just assemble. You need to know the original manufacturer such as Brembo, Lucas, etc.

You will also find that many of the after market manufacturers make components that are as good if not better than OEM.

It's best to find forum specific to the make of your car and do a search.

I recon George would know all that. I'd say the point is that, to most people, genuine parts come in a VAG box and are priced accordingly.

As the Doctor says above I know all this as I deal with it on a daily basis. However the situation is not always clear cut. Sometimes the genuine part is more expensive because it is better quality. Sometimes the genuine part is the exact same part in a different box with a much higher price tag, which is the situation you are alluding to. Experience and knowledge are needed to decide when it is better to stump up the extra for OE (genuine) parts and when the OEM (aftermarket) part is the smart option.

This is dangerous because although there is a lot of useful information on forums you also get a lot of nonsense being posted by people who may not have any idea what they are talking about. Also, forum members are often a bit like sheep and will follow the crowd. I have seen on some forums where a load of members all buy the same parts and prematurely sing their praises before waiting to see how long they will last or perform in the long term.
