i am a selling a car that's tax ran out at the end of july, must i tax it to sell it, or can the person buying the car look after that, i heard of people in the same situation who sold a car without tax, the buyer drove it home, if stopped by the gardai or if it was in an accident could the buyer blame the seller that it is your fault for knowningly selling a vehicle without the correct documents up to date ie tax disc, and the seller could be going to court rather than the buyer.

Tax resets after change of ownership, explain to garda that you signed the log book and it has been sent off and offer to go to your local garda station with it once you get it.

I did that for the last 2 weeks almost car was 6 months out of tax

go the garda station with what, i am selling the vehicle, the tax book will be going to the buyers address, once it leaves my driveway, i no longer should be getting any paperwork with regards to that car.

let's say i took your car for a spin with your permission with no tax on it, will the guards prosecute me or the rightful owner.

You do not need to tax it to sell it,

The new owner must tax it from date of sale once they receive the vlc back after you (the seller) sends it to shannon fully filled in.

Once they sign the vlc the car is theirs, and is no longer the sellers problem!!

They will have a 'grace' period to tax it, and if they are stopped on the way home they have absolutely no means to tax it and cannot be prosecuted (afaik

Misread i assumed you were a buyer, once you sign and send off taxbook it's no longer your concern, just make sure tax book stays in your hands
