Im looking for either a Freeview box which can record. HD would bd nice but not a necessity. I would reslly only use it for recording and watching back, not watching live.

Anyway Im wondering what would the best (ie cheapest) option be?

The Freeview boxesseem quite expensive compared to the Saorview PVR Ready boxes, so would a Saorview box be sble to pick up Freeview channels, providing I have a signal?

    cheers

Do you know that you can definitely get Freeview ok where you are?

I think you already know, but Freeview is the UK terrestrial service.

Saorview boxes will decode the standard def. Freeview channels but not HD.

Most Freeview HD will handle all transmissions, UK & ROI.

Why will a saorview box not decode Freeview HD?

Freeview HD and proposed NI Minimux uses DVB-T2 MODULATION, not DVB-T. This is a completely separate issue to the Codecs and HD vs SD etc. All such receivers also do DVB-T which ordinary Freeview and Saorview uses.

Essentially DVB-T2 was still in development when Saorview was rolling out. So while a USB stick on a PC only needs different software to do SD, HD, MPEG2, MPEG4, MHEG5, AAC, HE-AAC etc, no USB DVB-T stick can do DVB-T2 with a software update.

Some TVs for UK & Irish market have Saorview and Freeview HD (DVB-T and DVB-T2) certification. I doubt you will find a Saorview box with DVB-T2. Really if you want to receive Freeview, Freeview HD and Saorview get a "Freeview HD" box from Humax.
