How to know you're getting value for money when buying 2nd hand Skoda

    I'm looking at purchasing a Skoda Superb II at the moment, however struggling with how the cars seems to be priced, based on trim levels, engines (i.e. older 1.9TDi 103BHP and newer 1.6TDi 103BHP, 2.0TDi 140BHP, 170BHP) and mileage variations.

    I've looked at the OMSP from the VRT website for guidance on book value and find that on an e.g. €18000 car, the OMSP is only €15000 or so - is this a true relection on the profit margins on such used cars today in Ireland?

    I know the vlaue is based on what the market pays for such sales, however still don't want to pay over the top. :confused:

    Could anyone provide any insight into the pricing structures for such cars and if there is any links to where I can get what the true market value could be - I see this commonplace on UK websites, however never found the euivalent here.

    thanks OSI - that's what I thought and feared.

    So basically the seller is a quite in the dark. As I'm sure everyone knows, all cars have an 'extra' included on them that immediately comes off for cash sales or is absorbed in the trade-in discount. That 'extra' may vary from car to car, so was hoping for some sort of guide pricing structures.

    Search donedeal and the likes and get an idea of pricing. There is no hard and fast rule for this unfortunately. You'll have to base the price on each car as they come. Some will have high spec and be in a terribly condition, where as others will have less spec and be in great mechanical condition.

    Pity there is no way to know what depreciation model the e.g. VRT database uses, that woudl give a good estimate of base car price.

    Most of these are overpriced imo as they're in demand and will sell eventually. Buying something that's in demand from a dealer tbh I don't think you'll get value for money compared to buying privately.

    yeah, that's what I suspect, however when buying privately, you need tobe veryc areful, as there is little comeback after purchase.

    No comeback at all. Tbh I'd be just as careful buying from a dealer though as warranties don't last forever and there's plenty of problematic sh1t on forecourts, lots of which the dealer wouldn't even know is less than perfect.

    The car I looked at came with a 3month full, followed by 3month engine & gerbox warranty on a 2009 car - would that be a standard length independent dealer warranty or should I expect to see a 12month warranty?

    have you any idea what in general a dealer will charge over and above a private car - I had ~10% extra in my head, this for cars priced 15-20k. Does that sound about right?

    If I was buying a 2009 car Id be looking for a 12 month full warranty as a minimum. Maybe Im wide of the mark but to me a dealer offering 3 months full plus 3 months engine and gearbox on a 2009 is taking the piss, and it says to me that they do not have faith in the cars that they are selling to stand over them for 12 months.

    3 month partial warranty on a 2009 €15k car is awful.

    No hard and fast rules for dealer v private but it should be at least what you reckon for a guaranteed car off the forecourt compared to a private sale. You'll see differences of 10% between garages for similar stock though so it's very hard to quantify.

    The way the models go are
    Classic very basic spec.
    Ambiente in between spec a couple of extras maxi dot display and a bit nicer inside better radio.
    Elegance top spec walnut dash better radio and a completely different car inside to the classic.
    Then theres greenline which is about ambiente spec but has stop start etc to make it more efficient.

    If you can get an elegance as I find the extras kind of make the car. We have an elegance Octavia and it has a lot of extras some even a bit over the top. One extra which amazed me was if you leave the windows down and park the car if it starts to rain the car pulls up the windows itself not an extra needed but I suppose nice to have it.

    Is that warranty valid outside the Uk though? Otherwise it will be useless unless you are willing to drive it back everytime it requires work. Even so that warranty is very limited for such a new car.

    I think he'll be buying here in the ROI, he was only looking at OMSP to as a guide from what I can gather :)

    yeah that's right, I was just trying to gauge an accurate price.

    I've seen a 2009 Superb Elegance priced around €18k with the 6month warranty (last 3 months on engine and gearbox only) and although a nice car, just get the feeling that it's a little overpriced, however difficult to tell as no defined pricing lists anywhere in Ireland.

    Some of the delaers that import from UK have stated that they can get an equivalent spec car from UK at same price, but will have the newer (more efficient) diesel engine, so may wait to see what package they offer.

    The newer engines have much greater output for same engine size without Co2 level increase, so on that basis I may favour one of the UK imprt cars - the only downside I know of is the speedometer in MPH, however te central console can display actual speed on digital display in KPH anyway and my existing (old) car is still MPH, so that's not a big deal.
