How to ship a suitcase

    Hi Folks

I'm taking some time out to go travelling for a while. This will involve spending some time in Australia. I'm looking to send a suitcase to Australia (so it arrives just before I get there) to save me lugging it around.

What's the best / cheapest way to do this?

    Thank you.

    J

Maybe just buy in Australia the sort of things you want to transport, and then give them to charity when you leave?

First of all consider if you really need it. It's going to be very expensive to send it on. Then, if you're not going to need it for a while then send it by sea freight. It's much cheaper than air. Even cheaper though would be if you could throw it into a container. Lots of people emigrating at the moment and some of them will have containers.

When I moved back from Australia I thought I would be sending some bags on ahead by courier. When the quote came back at EUR 1000 I ended up lugging the lot through China, Mongolia and Russia on the Trans-Sib.

    Thanks for your input guys.

I want to send the suitcase separately and don't want to buy stuff out there though.

Should I just go to (say) DHL? How does one even go about sending something by sea freight?

    Thanks again.

There are two forums that are more suited to your type of query:
    britishexpats.com and pomsinoz.com
Consider signing up to these for any future queries you have as an "expat" in Aus. You'll find a lot more people who have gone through the same issues in the past. Although Boards is good too!

Other than that, my advice is shop around:
    http://www.excessbaggage.ie/
    http://www.citypostparcel.ie/page.aspx?id=25
    An Post
    other couriers.

It's not going to be cheap, but it will be cheaper than airline excess. All couriers should have a sea freight option.
