hi folks just wondering what peoples opinions are on this. i've narrowed my choice of next car down to 2. a VW Scirocco TSI 2.0L Petrol or a BMW 320d M sport.

i would most likely but from the uk as the spec is always better on uk models and my last 2 cars were uk models and i have been very pleased with them. i heard alot of good things about the vw scirocco TSI 2.0L and i like that there are not too many on irish roads. they also seem like little rockets 210BHP and i like the idea of the DSG transmission. on the other hand VW seem to have a bad name for alot of parts going bust or maybe this is just older models? i do like the idea of driving a sporty hot hatch with alot of torque and handling. but would it be a step down from driving a BMW 3 series?

in regards the BMW 320d M sport, i think they are beautiful looking cars and the diesel would be easier on my pocket to run & tax but i heard the turbos can be a problem on these diesels and could be very expensive in the long run. they are 177BPH which seems nippy enough. the other thing is i currently drive a 318i 2004 saloon and i cant fault it, so it would be hard for me to move away from BMW unless it was to a really great car.

what are peoples opinions on these two cars, is anyone driving either and how would you rate them i.e. positives & negatives and which would you choose?

    thanks all feedback welcome :)

I'd say go for the 320d have one myself and can't fault them . never had a problem with the turbo either . Just check car history , make sure it's been well looked after . That's the 320d not sure about the msport though.

    Not an E90 :(

So ugly/cramped/spartan(in most cases) and the wheels look stupidly small on 90% of them

Passed a tractor (320d) Today with powerflow exhausts. Why do people buy these things? Spend 500 euro on a remap,1000 euro on an exhaust, live with smelly oil as a fuel and pretend they know about cars when their turbo is about to blow, their egr valve is fooked and their flaps are clogged. Mate has a 3.0 tdi that just cost 2.5k to get its flaps and egr unblocked N/A petrol is the way to go

OP, do you have pets or kids or have a bulky hobby? The boot on the Scirocco is tiny, as are the back seats.

Also consider a Golf GTI, they're largely the same car, but substantially more practical and more readily available second hand.

A friend of mine had a 2009 Scirocco...it looked really nice but the boot was about the size of a Tayto Christmas Box. The inside really closes in on you as well. Now, he's a big tall guy and it was one of the cars he was comfortable in

Apart from it looking nice, I thought it was neither fish nor fowl. Like what is it?? A revival of cool car? Fair enough but was a Corrado not cooler? I don't know. He didn't keep it for long.

I have a 320d (E90), not a M sport. My summary would be "nice car but no big deal!" However, in fairness, it has been totally reliable and it has enough power (176bhp) to give yourself a fright if you're not careful. On the motorway just press the right pedal and it goes whoosh, but around town that diesel engine is not so pleasant to drive. Worst of all, it comes with runflat tyres (not sure about the M sport) and I can say that the Continental runflats are so bad they should be banned. On a bad, choppy road the car is hard to control and the steering "fights" with the driver. I changed to Kumhos and they are much better, almost as good as conventional tyres. This tyre comment is more important than you might expect so check it out. I can't give you any first hand comment on the VW, but the whole VAG group uses common floor pans, suspensions, engines and other components, so it should be easy to find a comparison.

Is the 320d an E92 coupe or E90 saloon?

I'm not sure if that question is for Danny or me, however mine is an E90 saloon.

i'm a young free and single career man so no wife or kids cancerns for a while i hope so they whole no space in the back is not an issue as it will be mostly be me driving as my play toy and for work (and of course for the blonde in the front beside me) ;)

so with this in mind more opinions welcome?

its the E92 coupe M sport i'd be thinking of. initially the diesel over the petrol because the petrol BMW i have is a thirsty bitch, i dont think i could handle forking out so much on petrol again so i thought the diesel would be the better option.

in regards the scirocco i would only go for the 2.0L TSI Petrol.
