Hi all,

This is my first time on this site and i am hoping you can help me.

I have an Acer Aspire 3690 which when new had a partition on the drive which allowed the computer to RESTORE itself and to make RESTORE cd's just in case anything ever went wrong, and guess what, it did.

My computer can not access this vital partition as it has been wiped clean when a friend decided to put the latest version of windows onto my system for me, he also overlooked making the RESTORE backup cd's just in case anything went wrong, but he was trying to be helpful so i forgive him.

I have tried to purchase the RECOVERY cd's in question from Acer, but it would be easier to make a claim for social welfare, or so i am told.

My question is this, does anyone have an Acer Aspire 3690, which they could make the RECOVERY cd's from and send them on to me. I am now desperate and really need help here. I live in Offaly and of course i will cover all costs.

What exactly is the problem?

The rescue disk you speak of is system specific, specific to your computer and yours only. So you cant buy one.

If you're doing this to get data back, its gone. If you're doing this because you're having trouble with windows 7, try downloading the right drivers from the Acer support page.

If you want to go back to XP, you can get a vanilla or acer branded xp disk and just install fresh. Again, get the right drivers before you start.

Your advice sounds good, the reason i am looking for the recovery cd's is that i wanted to return my system to the original state it was in when i purchased it.

I did not realise that another Acer Aspire 3690 would not work for me.

Where would i download a vanilla or Acer xp disk ?

I think i found vanilla, its sp3 and about 545mb in size, i am currently dowloading it. How will i know what drivers i need to download from Acer, or how would i go about identifying them ?

Get the drivers here. (use operating system filter)

BE CAREFUL.

Just searching for XP randomly on the net will likely just get you a virus! Only download a .iso file and only from a microsoft site.

If you enter your model number or service tag into their downloads/support system it should list all applicable drivers, I'll take a look later if I have time.

Just thinking now guy's, if i download and install vanilla XP sp3 and the drivers from the Acer site, will i need an activation key for windows xp and if yes how do i get one ?

To the best of my knolwedge, XP cannot be downloaded legally, so I won't discuss it here.

You'll need a Windows XP OEM CD (i.e. XP Home or Professional) matching your COA sticker (on the bottom of the laptop), which will also tell you the product key you can use to activate Windows.



Usually, OEM (not retail) CDs from other manufacturers will work, so if you can borrow a Windows XP CD from someone although it's non-ACER, chances are that it will activate with your key.

Torq is right here, didnt know that OEM disks were intercompatible, always assumed SLP activiation was brand specific.

If you go here:
http://www.acer.co.uk/ac/en/GB/content/drivers
Then type in 3690, click on the suggestion, then hit search.

Then select XP Pro 32 or Home 32 depending on which you have.

This will give this list, with download links for them. Download them all onto a USB key, so once you install you can just go through installing all of them, a-z, rebooting where necessary.

Then do all windows updates.
