New (Acer) Notebook Screen Very Dim

Hi all, have a new notebook less than a week. The model is the:

    Acer Aspire TimelineX 5830T

It's great but one problem. I noticed from the first minute that the screen brightness is very dim. I have checked/changed:

    -FN+arrow key
-Windows power options, screen brightness maxed and
    -high performane
    -cable in and out
-BIOS, screen still dim, restored to default, no change

The update service does not show any new graphics drivers. I could not install an Intel one -it said the manufacturer can only supply it. I later tried uninstalling that driver, installed the generic Intel one and that did nothing - I wondered could it be some inacessible eco setting or something.

I'm comparing the screen to my old, budget laptop which kills it dead. The graphics and brightness does not wash out the colours on that one though, and it really is a budget one. Video, pictures and now games look dim and a little ugly.

Anything I can do to check/test? Does it sound like it might be normal, just dimmer? I know many laptops use fairly identical screens within certain price points, is it a case that the manufacturer just did something different? Acer said they're happy to collect it and test it. I just want to do one step at a time, a week without it won't be fun, plus I'll have to backup 300GBs again.

    Thanks!
