    Budget : cca € 11 K
daily mileage : cca 50 miles, motorway or well maintained roads /well, for Ireland/
    age : 2008 and higher
Requirements : good economy, great MPG, safety, decent room but doesn't need to be an estate, only one child and no pets

    no Kia please

Thank you for any advice on models to be recommended. I'm having a look at Suzuki SX4 1.6 diesel, Citroen C3 Picasso or C4, Mazda 3 or Skoda Fabia.

Why rule out the likes of a Kia Ceed SW, it will do most of the things equally aswell as some of the other cars on your list there.

    Kia Cee'd ...... :)

Well, the reason is simple - the Kia Ceed I had just had a steering malfunction and sent me straight into a wooden barrier. I'm fine, the car's not. So I need a new one and somehow, a new Ceed isn't on my top priority list.

And just to add - yes, I was a big fan of that car and loved driving it. Till the moment it sailed straight where it wasn't supposed to.

Was thinking about it but right now, I'm not sure I would trust anything Korean. Nothing against them, I know even Kias are very reliable and most people love them, just happened to get a lemon. Still ....

So what happens now with the old car, was it a manufacturing defect or what?

Scrapped and I don't think either the insurance or Kia are interested in a detailed investigation. Makes me a bit suspicious but the damage is apparently so high (though the car started and drove afterwards) that the insurance decided to scrap instead of repair.

Sorry to go off topic, but whose fault is it down as so? Do you lose your no claims bonus?

Toyota do have their stupid problems but still managed to come out on top for been very reliable compared to some of their rivals(Germans)

Not sure yet. I can have one claim to lose it but I want to get a full report from the initial diagnostics and see what can be done. Unfortunately it happened one day before I was supposed to fly abroad and I'm only returning on Friday so my husband is handling the whole lot.
But the diagnostics apparently registered a steering malfunction just as I was driving out of a roundabout and that caused for the car to lose control. Fortunately for me I was driving at a low speed so no injury on the human side.

if you hear that for toyota dealer it must be kearys of cork who stop sell toyota because they are too reliable make no money in fix the car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,528 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

I sold Toyota for years and I'll readily admit that the auris is a very below average car.

There are other more logical reasons why kearys don't do Toyota anymore.

Same for any dealer doing warranty work paid for by distributor. no profit in it. Nothing to do with how good/bad the cars are though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 564 ✭✭✭haminka

aehm ... OK, so auris is off the list ...
back to the original topic? please?
how about Ford Fiesta? I was baffled about how spacious they became

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,528 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

New fiesta is quite big for a small car alright. Was your ceed diesel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 564 ✭✭✭haminka

yep, the 09 version before the recent facelift. it was actually a fantastic car to drive, liked the engine a lot.

What's the opinions on Citroen? In terms of reliability of the brand etc. My sister is driving the 7seater Picasso and she is quite happy with it.

Ignore the stereotypes, no reason why you shouldn't go for one if you like it. The diesel engine in them is seen in everything from the MINI to the Volvo S80 and is very reliable but only buy one with a full service history - this is vital! They need to be serviced on time all the time (otherwise you will have problems), which is every year or 20,000 km, whichever is the sooner. That's not a 'drawback' in my book though - ALL cars should be serviced at the appropriate intervals;)!
