1 Workstation Vs 8 PC's

    Hi,

I'm currently introducing a work station at work, only problem is, theres no room for it.

Theres 8 people in the office (Engineering), each have there own PC with monitor-keyboard etc.

The workstation is being brought in to drive CAD software.

My solution is to bring in some sort of a splitter box, allowing the engineer to switch his/her monitor, key and mouse from his PC to the workstation.

They can then login to that workstation and log out when finished and then switch back to there PC. The workstation can be placed in the office also. Remote desk topping is too slow.
It does not matter that they can only login one at a time.

I hope ive most bases covered to make it understandable. All input appreciated.:)

A multi user kvm switch is probably what your after, wheather such a switch is available for multiple machines I don't know.

Thanks nick, does the distance between monitor and workstation matter?

Thanks nick, does the distance between monitor and workstation matter?

You would need to keep in mind that you'd be limited by the length of keyboards/mice wires and vga cables/dvi cables going this route (you could probably use usb extenders which would work ok), however I cannot see any other solution if remote desktop isn't an option. I cannot imagine a multi user kvm kit would be cheap either, but admittedly not items I've had much expierience with

Nick has already suggested but why not use remote desktop? I have 4 users connecting to a workstation here that runs Gerber viewing software (similar to CAD). Only problem i have is when 2 people want to use the PC, which is rare.

Remote desktop is the way to go. You might want to look into why its slow. Some remote desktop solutions would be faster than others. Maybe you should benchmark a few of them.

I may try the remote desktop route first although, it has been tried before in another company with the software (Autodesk 3D Inventor) and failed to impress. Thanks for the input lads
