What to wear to a wedding....

Please help me, for once I am completely lost.

I'm going to a wedding later this month - haven't been to one in years. It's a huge family occasion and I'm stumped for what to wear.

My everyday look is very casual (jeans, converse, skate shoes, t-shirts - that sort of thing) and I only usually go to rock bars so my going out look is very simple - one of my many black skirts, black shoes or boots, a top of some sort and a leather jacket. The only other clothes I wear are my standard office wear or formal work wear.

I have my look and I'm comfortable in it but I know obviously I'm going to have to change it up for this wedding. I think my mother is afraid I'm going to show up in a black mini and fishnets

I want something that looks the part while still reflecting my own style. I still want to look like me, because on other occasions where I wear something entirely out of character I just feel uncomfortable.

I'm a size 14 - 16 and my favourite colours are black, red and purple. I'd also like to have my upper arms covered as I hate them so something with sleeves or that could be worn with a bolero would be great.

All suggestions welcomed - I'm desperate!

i wouldnt consider myself great with fashion etc. but maybe check out 'retro' in the georges st arcade dublin?
they stock 'stop staring' dresses, which you can get on line too.

retro, rock, that type of thing. different but very flattering and womanly!!
imelda may gets some of her clothes there.

Yeah I know the sort you mean, I've had a look a few online and there are some lovely ones out there.

I'm familiar with Retro as well, they have some beautiful stock, but it can be VERY pricey and awkward to get the sizes you want in there.

hi you can't go wrong with a nice black dress and you could funk it up with heels (try Irregular Choice) and wear a bolero/shrug.. one to the elbow can be really flattering.. i got a lovely high neck ruffle one on amazon.

Try debenhams Star by Julian McDonald Jersey dresses. You would be able to wear a fourteen in them as they are usually a nice fit.

If you stick to a black dress you will feel yourself and add your own style with accessories.. have a great time

ps treat yourself to make up or hair do and you wil feel good

I agree with the recommendation for Star by Julien McDonald. Im a 12 bottom and a 14 top and carry weight on my belly and boobs so I find dress shopping a nightmare!!! Usually my boobs dont fit or my belly is straining!! And because Im short a lot of stuff looks too long on me!

But the Julien McDonald dresses work well with curves and drape well, Im actually wearing one I bought last year to a wedding this week. I wore one to a wedding last year that had full sleeves, very 60s.

Then you could get a nice clip in bit of head gear, like a black fascinator or a feather or something, and nice black shoes and youd be away!

Do many people find good stuff in Coast? Ive personally never ever been able to find something that fits me in there. There is very little give in their dresses imo, you need to be very slim and tall to wear them well.

Speaking for myself I've gotten some great clothes there. I agree with you that the sizes do tend to be slightly smaller. I always ignore the size given on the label and try a few on first. Also they do have fantastic sales, great reductions and not just the tat they couldn't sell that season. Also a handy service they have is reserving your clothes online and collecting them in store. One of my fav clothes shops TBH

Now that I think of it, I may have had a bad experience in there where my boobs would only fit into a size 18 or something and never gone back lol!!

Defintely second the recommendation about getting a black or purple dress and funk it up with cool shoes like Irregular Choice from Schuh and accessories. I wore a purple dress to a wedding and bought all lime green accessories and it looked nice.

I was at a wedding recently and a girl sitting at my table was wearing: JEANS, a black t shirt and an oul cardigan thrown over it to complete the look. I saw her outside the church and thought she couldn't be a guest. She should have asked on here what to wear:D. I'd be stuck myself sometimes but really.....that took the biscuit.
