Flying with a backpack and tent

Hi guys, just looking for a little advice here. Im heading to Leeds festival next month, and currently debating whether to go either by rail and sail(slightly cheaper, but WAAAAAY longer!), or to fly with Ryanair. My only concern is that I would have to check in my backpack with ryanair, and whether this would accrue any further expense, i.e. if they argue that a tent strapped to the base of my backpack has to be checked in as a seperate bag. Does anyone have any experience with this type of thing?

I use my backpack to go everywhere and have never had to check it in, when walking through ryanair I sling it like it's some very light bag over my shoulder even though it's about to rip my arm off with the weight. Having it looking a little loose and walk with intent and you should be fine.
As for the tent, I dunno, i'd be inclined to pick up a cheap on over there and leave it behind when finished.

How big/bulky is the tent? When it is strapped to your backpack, do the two of them come in under the size and weight restrictions for Ryanair cabin baggage?

Your cabin baggage can't weigh more than 10kg. Size wise, it can not be more than 55cm in length, 40cm in width & 20 cm in depth. If your cabin luggage meets those criteria, you'll be fine. If it doesn't, they'll probably make you separate them and check the tent. I think the check bag fee is 50 euros.

Sorry, was a little unclear on this. Its my checked luggage Im asking about. I'd be checking in a big backpack with a tent attached to it. I'll have a seperate backpack as hand luggage.
