last week I was out for a drive around at dusk 22:20 and was driving through a bog with forestry in it and couldn't believe it when a woodcock got off the middle of the road. just wondering if any of you have seen woodcock at this time of the year?

Not all woodcock migrate. Some live here full time, quite a number actually.

I see them regularily throughout the summer. I even came across a couple of chicks last year.

I emptied out some pond mud in some hollows on a woodland path and was surprised to see regularily spaced probe marks in the dried mud some time later. I wondered was it woodcock and confirmed it recently when one of the mud patches had three woodcock feathers on it.

I put up three young ones at my feet this afternoon, they only flew about 20 yards. They were in the same cutaway coupe as the clutch I saw last year.
