Code of conduct on M11

    Hey guys,

Something has been bothering me for a while! I work in Dublin and head back to Wexford every friday evening. When I get to the end of the M11 where the two lanes merge just before the Beehive there is always a traffic jam on a friday evening. My question is this:

I always get to this point in the left hand lane. Even though the right hand lane is not as busy I never go into it as I would feel bad passing by cars that are sitting in the left lane. As a result, I always get pissed off when I am sitting in the left lane and other cars fly by in the right lane and then push their way in when the lanes merge.

Am I right to feel annoyed or should I do the same thing?!

    Just leave em to it.

You'll probably pass them further on down the way anyway :)

Funnily enough. I started reading a book called Traffic last night.
    http://www.amazon.com/Traffic-Drive-What-Says-About/dp/0307264785

    The prologue is called
"Why I Became a Late Merger
    (and Why You Should Too)"

He has it on his web site

you should do the same thing. Zip merge at the point where the lanes merge isa the correct way to proceed

Never thought about that one, always make sense to use the entire road and merge (zipper) at the end, rather than merge all over place and clog up the traffic.

    Heres how it works here:

As has been said before, Irish people can't merge. You get the people in the left lane getting thick because the right lane is 'moving faster' so some jump into that lane. Then you get people in the right lane panicking when they see the merge / off ramp ahead and try jump the opposite direction.

If every let one car in like a zipper, there would be no traffic jam. But thats never ever going to happen in Ireland. People are far too defensive in their driving (Nothing wring with driving defensively mind you) Add to that the people who think speed and lane hopping saves time, and you have a winning combination for idiotic behaviour.

I met a merge point like this in California and it had traffic lights on both sides of the road showing alternate red/green. They switched after each car passed through.
Meant you had to stop but traffic actually moved pretty quickly.

Merge in turn, most efficient way. Unfortunately Irish people seem to think that if they've chosen to sit in a line of traffic for 5 minutes that the person who makes full use of the roadway available is trying to pull a fast one and in no circumstances should they be allowed to merge safely. :P

I remember in Northern Ireland on the approach to Newry before the bypass was open that the authorities actually put up signs telling people to 'Use Both Lanes' as the Irish heading north for the shopping were causing long tailbacks by sitting in the left lane.

This was done before, the right lane is there for a reason right until it ends.

In New Zealand they have signs such as this:

    It works well...
