Would people be interested if RTÉ made a 3D channel just like Sky 3D and put it onto Saorview to be available for people with 3D ready TV's?

Think of all the people with HDTV's that are currently watching RTE. HD on RTE One and Two is a long way out yet, and would benefit a lot more people than 3D. Having actual decent picture quality on RTE One (RTE Two is ok for SD with the upscaling), would be a better idea than spending a lot of money to indulge a handful of people with 3DTVs with occasional content, most of which is only broadcast in SD to begin with.

I have a 3D TV. Every night during the Olympics, BBC show an hour of 3D highlights from the days events.

This is available through UPC on the BBC HD channel. Also available on FreeSat HD - for, eh, free!

Have to say it's very impressive to watch.

3D requires a huge investment in equimpent, and editing time to make it look good. BBC doing a full hour a night is a great step forward really. It's not worth RTE's time right now since the market is so small here.

A lot of people do have 3D TV's now. Any high end TV these days is 3D by default (high refresh rates and good processing power) so it's becoming more and more popular. Yeah it's a gimmick - but it's class!

RTE One HD first please before a 3D channel that a small minority can use.

Yeah I agree RTÉ One HD would be great but they maybe could do what the BBC is doing with the Olympics by showing an hour of 3D content everyday.

RTE really only have 2 channels. As someone who would benefit from 3D content, I think it would be unfair to deny those who don't want 3D content an hours worth of airtime. I think BBC have their own cameras (including 3d) at the Olympic venues, in addition to Olympic Broadcasting Services who distribute coverage worldwide. RTE are streched when there are a few big football matches on the same day, so for now I'm delighted that BBC are trialling 3D, but it's unreasonable to expect RTE to do the same.

Why RTE should waste more licence payers' money on what is nothing more than a gimmick is beyond me. There's little enough room on the MUXs.

    To answer your question: No.

I don't see it as a waste of money, because we want RTE to be on the ball when 3D without glasses becomes standard. Every TV manufacturer has 3D sets, and the price of them is coming down every day so I do think it's more of a when than an if. Still, I can't see them doing it with the number of channels currently.

Since I'm physically incapable of seeing stereoscopic 3D the answer is no from me.
