Solutions to Google Analytics not tracking referrals via mobile apps?

I've only just realised that Google Analytics doesn't track visitors who have clicked through to my site via a mobile application such as Facebook, Twitter, QR code readers etc. GA reports these as "Direct Traffic". Is there a solution to this, rather than spending lots of money on specialist software such as that supplied by Argyle Social at $300p/m? Thanks in advance.

    Nelly
I know that you have to use an urchin tracker (specific identifiable URL for a specific medium) for a QR code, like-

    http://www.example.ie/?utm_source=referrer&utm_medium=qr_code&utm_campaign=qr_code.

Nelly - that's an example URL (I should have said that!).

You can may one for your own QR link by going to googles link creator:

Just fill in the appropriate fields and they will begin to show up in your analytics.

I think Nelly is talking about tracking traffic coming from a mobile app so I don't think the above method would work in this case.

No, I appreciate the Mobile side of the question - and avoided it as much as possible!

But his QR code, the URL he builds into the qr code ie when he specifies to the QR builder the url he wishes to assemble, that should have a unique UTM URL.

This can then be varied, if the QR code appears on a poster - one url, on a print ad - another different qr code etc.

    Thanks for the replies!

Thats good news for QR codes but not really for Social apps such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin etc because you can't add tags to the URL's of your social links and you can't add tags to website URL's on these profiles without them looking rediculously long. You could maybe use Bit.ly URL shorteners but I have never seen this done. Am I understanding this correctly?
