€2,500 for 2002 Golf, worth it??

I've been offered a 2002 Golf 1.6L for 2,500 euro. I know the car, it has been treated well, and is in good condition, but I don't know a whole pile about Golf's in general. Some say a 1.4 is rubbish and the 1.6 is better and vice versa, so I'm just wondering if I should take it?

    Thanks

Bit pricey I would have though, Although hard to tell with knowing the history, condition, etc.

For example, A quick donedeal search suggests you could get a GTI for that kind of money

I see alright on donedeal that they seem to be cheaper, but it might be worth the extra few pound seen as I know the car and I'd be happy enough knowing it's not clocked, crashed etc..

But are the 1.6 Golfs reliable/good cars?

They're better than the 1.4, but the Mk4 Golf has never done much for me. Still, if you drive gently it's a comfortable and safeish place to sit.

    €2.5k for a 2002 1.6 Golf?

That seems kinda pricey but if you know the car's history then maybe it's a good buy..

I always have the same reaction myself, but people will pay what I consider to be silly money for them.

I know, throwing €2.5k into max price on donedeal and seeing what comes up makes me weep that the OP is getting a 10 year old semi-basic Golf for the same money...:o

I got 2.5k trade in on my 01 1.4 Golf CL last November.

It was a low mileage and very clean example, but still. The garage then had it up for 2950 and it was gone in less than a week, so it shows you the silly premium they seem to hold...

I miss the tractor like tickover of my 1.4 VAG engined Octavia and the 16v badge :(

But seriously for 2.5k i would get a tdi or a gti mk4, 1.6 is nonsensical in terms of fuel tax etc in comparison

Was looking at changing my golf a few weeks back, '01 tdi, 155k miles, garage were offering my €2,250 for it, they definetly have a good resale, OP I'd say if you know the car and are happy with it, its probably worth it! i'm sure you could pick one up for 6 ot 700 less, but it could be a ball of scrap!!

People are far too caught up in this "that's wayyy overpriced" mindset on this forum. A car is worth exactly what someone will pay for it.. no less, no more.

Personally if I was happy with the car, knew the history and that it hadn't been messed about and was looked after, I'd happily pay a bit more for the peace of mind that the arse isn't about to drop out of it a week after I bought it and leave me with a massive repair bill.

At the risk of being unpopular then, OP.. negotiate what you think is a fair price for pace of mind and don't mind what someone else thinks is "value"

Me too, it's always worth paying a little extra for a well-minded example. What I wouldn't pay a premium for is image.

I would be the same in that I'd happily pay more for a minded car but a car is also overpriced if it is priced at a much higher figure relative to similar models on sale. Still though €2.5k for a 10 year old Golf is beyond me, I'd spend a grand on a nice 406 diesel and waft around in comfort and get great fuel economy and use the extra to tax it.

    I don't think I've ever heard anyone say a 1.4 golf is better than a 1.6 golf
