Inland that would put you probably in Ballymena which isn't necessarily the friendliest town to stop over in for someone from the south. On the coast it would be towns and villages like Cushendall or Carnlough. However the towns and villages in rural Antrim tend to be a deep shade or either blue or green and you will find that you are on your guard a lot of the time. I remember driving through one village and you couldn't help but notice that the biggest building in the village had 'xxxx (name of the village) Glasgow Rangers Supporters Club' painted on the gable end. Needless to say I kept the foot firmly on the gas and we didn't stop in that village!

I think you'd probably be better staying a night up on the north coast of Antrim where tourist facilities are better and there are more hotels and restaurants, think of staying a night in Bushmills, Portrush or Portstewart.

there's a scenic route and motorway route. I think the motorway is only 90 mins and the scenic route is a nice drive anyhow. We stayed in the culloden just outside the city and it was grand.

It's a 'nice drive' for the passenger, not the driver who has to keep his/her eyes firmly on the narrow roads and doesn't get to enjoy the views!

    Passenger: Oh look, there's Scotland.

Driver: Would you shut the fcuk up, I'm driving.

I don't think it's so far to bushmills from Belfast
Maybe an hours drive or so

I'd either stay in Portrush and amble back along the coast by Dunluce castle Carrick a rede, and fair head, and the towns at the mouths of the glenns

Or stay in Belfast and head on early in the morning

The Antrim coast is very pretty and wild, well worth going to see

I used Allens Tours for a day trip recently from Belfast. GBP 16 per person, a bargain.
