BMW E46 VRT Query

Apologies if this has been posted before, could not find it in the mountain of VRT info.

Thinking of importing an E46 BMW 318i that has suffered the subframe problem common to E46s and now needs that remedied. Car being sold in UK for spares and repair.

Will the VRT office take this into account despite the fact it has full MOT and outwardly appears to be in good condition for age? I.e do they just plug the variables of model, age, mileage and options into the formula and charge whatever the computer says? The OMSP is clearly significantly less with the subframe problem.

Anyone got any experience of this?

I think you can appeal VRT charges but you have to pay it before appealing it (you might get a partial refund if sucessful). Is it worth it to bring in a car that you know has to have work done on it? And if you want a proper E46, I'd strongly recommend a 320i (or 325 / 330 / M3 :)) 318 is very underpowered for the size of the car. Is it a saloon, coupé or soft top?
