A friend of mine said to me that with axxa if you have fully comp insurance you will also be covered to drive someone else's car too, but i find this hard to believe?

I know in the UK the only way to be covered on someone else's car for most motor insurances is to be a 'named driver' on their insurance which could cost extra depending on the persons age ect

How does it generally work in ireland, i know it might vary from policy to policy

    This!

I know some people who are insured to drive other cars through their own insurance (just 3rd party cover though). I can't get this cover myself with my insurance because I'm a learner, but like you said it varies from policy to policy.

Lets say i was to find an insurer that would cover me to drive other peoples cars but 3rd party only like you said, would i then be able to drive any car i like, eg a nice expensive sports car, or are you restricted to a certain class? Because if you can thats what i find to be surprising

It does vary from policy to policy and from insurer to insurer. Some comprehensive policies from some have it as standard; other comprehensive policies from the same company / broker may not have it as standard and it costs extra say 50/60 per year.

One company offers comprehensive cover for driving other cars, all others AFAIK only offer 3rd party. Complicated area, make sure you know what you're buying up front. If someone tells you they have cover to drive your car ask them to prove it by showing you their policy and ins. cert.(you need to read both together)

Hopefully if you're driving theirs they'll ask you the same.

    HTH.

with my insurance company i can drive someone else car, 3rd party only, as long as it is not more than 2L

That's fairly standard too (I think mine is 2.5l with some maximum value, €50k I think) and the other thing I forget is you can never drive a commercial / car-van on your driving other cars extension and vice versa, no van insurance allows driving your car, but garage insurance does if they're servicing / repairing it.

I've never really thought about the specifics, but I guess it's good to check the find print if you were going ahead with something like that!

I think the hardest part would be finding a friend to loan you a nice expensive sports car to drive knowing that only a 3rd party is covered in the case of an accident :P

Definitely not if you are a learner driver. No policy out there will cover you third party on other cars.
