was wondering what the going rate is for ploughing , levelling , harrowing and sowing grass at the minute , the usual package

got a quote of 150 euro an acre from a contractor the other day , seemed expensive

If the paddocks you want to reseed are fairly well laid out already give direct drilling some consideration. We did 10 acres last year worked well. Lime is vital for germination using this method. Hassle free, no stone picking, no rolling and cost €40 per acre.

    What's involved? Pre- and post-spraying?

Spray as normal for re-seeding just make sure not much cover on paddock either spray and cut for silage or spray and graze bare. Then get the direct seeder and apply lime as soon as he is finished while the ground is still scarred but the drill. There is very little lime available in the top couple of inches of the sod so you have to make some available otherwise the acidity reduces germination. Youngstock/sheep help enormously with tillering. Very obvious in our case which paddocks wer grazed with calves and which by cows only. Plenty of grass on both but seeding rows still obvious where no calves grazed. Weed spray might be more important with direct drilling than conventional reseeding. If you are trying to get a paddock back into production after severe poaching or compaction problems probably not the route but if your happy with how level the paddock is for fert spreading/topping then I would recommend it.
