non nbs user in nbs area

    nbs user

my neighbour has decided not to go for a nbs package and instead went for the normal 3 package, 60 gigs a month compaired to 25

cant blame him, 10 quid more for 35 gigs more

however i have noticed my speeds at night have dropped considerably. i know this is down to contention. My speed is lower than what i should be getting in relation to the min speeds listed in the t&cs of the nbs package, .5 download, .5 upload and a ping of 1010

my question is - does the non nbs package hog our contention ratio preventing me from getting these speeds or is it seen as a similar package and i have to live in hope that they update the exchange so i can get normal internet. i do know my neighbour downloads a lot and leaves it run all night over the weekend downloading.

    thanks

The basics are its exactly the same set of masts and infrastucture that supports the NBS, 3 MBB and all 3 phone users.

So your nieghbor is sharing your bandwidth btw don't tell anyone else anything other than NBS and 3 MBB are crap (not far wrong there :D) as anymore users in your area will slow your connection down even more.

    Thanks for that

I knew the answer already but I said I would ask a few experts. So I can now say for certain he is bullshxxing when he says he gets good speeds all the time.

Can't wait now till October to see what will happen

22:1 to 18:1 contention ratio promised. If not I think I will be moving :D

that is exactly what has happened to me

same situation, small parish which has no broadband, only midband or (god forbid) satellite

i had brilliant speeds in fairness. After arguing for weeks i got an external aerial and have it hooked up to by b260a (i will soon be getting a better modem)

i work from home and during the day i get 5 mb download and 2 upload. I am only 1k from Mast. At night i used to get 2mb and 1 download. Both pings under 50

now at night as you can see it has gone, in the space of a couple of weeks. I can't understand it

I too could get a non nbs package, set up a bank account with a work address (if your work allows you) and use that as your address. But you only need to do this if you buy over the phone. My neighbor walked into our local 3 store and got it.

i think that is a pile of xxxxx. They should at least have a system that can recognize the difference between products and give the nbs users priority. We are supposed to be getting a steady 1.6mb download all the time, day or night.

I have the nbs team now looking into it, yeahhh i'll soon be getting a call from someone in india asking me to clear my cache, yipppeee

Sorry i am a tad bit mad as it is beginning to affect work. Rant over :D

Your not supposed to be getting a min of 1.6Mbps thats a figure just like the up to 7.2Mbps etc thats quoted in the advertising that means nothing on its own.

The full wording of the next upgrade is a Minimum at the edge of a cell of 2.3Mbps with a max contention ratio of 18:1 (I was a bit surprised about that odd 2.3Mbps figure too http://www.dcenr.gov.ie/Communications/Communications+Development/National+Broadband+Scheme/NBS+FAQs.htm)

The figures are unmeasureable as its about as easy to find the edge of a cell as it is to find a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow (although 3 did manage to dig gold with the nbs ), what it should mean is if the number of users increases the capacity of the cell should be increased or more masts put up but thats not happening.

afaik 3 aren't supposed to be "selling" non NBS contracts in NBS areas but the operative word is selling because a user can go and "buy" whatever they want.

even if it is a marketing scam i shouldn't be getting these kind of speeds at any time during the day or night

speeds are brilliant from 1am to 5pm, then bang, they drop instantly, like there is a switch at the mast or something. every once in a while i will get 1 meg for about 5 minutes and think everything is back to normal but then it goes again

i used to get 2.5 megs constantly at night up until a week ago

it is simply just wrong for the nbs to allow these speeds

while i wait for a response from three i decided to test my own theory

so went to a 3 store and got a dongle with a sim card, pay as you go

topped up with 10 euro and got 2 gigs for a week and replaced my sim in the b260a modem with the new sim

here is my speed tonight, bare in mind i live in a nbs area and this is not a nbs package but a standard 3 package
