I did a system restore to "Last known good configuration" but it totally buggered everything up. When I turn on the machine it shows the Samsung logo but then a black screen with a winking cursor top left, which is where everything shudders to a grinding halt. Nothing I try seems to work, any simple things I can do (non techie) or is the machine dead?
It's a second hand machine and the previous owner had lost the install disc.
I searched for a previous thread to try and sort the problem but nothing seems to match my black screen of eternal waiting.

    Model?

If it is the original installation, it might have a "restore to factory default" facility. (Note: you will loose all personal files and settings, back up using a Linux Live CD if necessary)

    Operating System?

If it's Vista or 7 you can do a system restore from a Windows Repair Disk (if you have one). ;)

    Samsung R40plus. Vista.

    WRD! *slaps forehead*

    Cheers Torgay, I'll try that.

F4 at the POST screen should get you to the recovery utility, if the recovery partition is still there.

Apparently, Microsoft’s Anti-Piracy department has sent out DMCA take down notices re Vista/7 repair disk ISOs, so i can't help you there. ;)

If you have access to another Vista machine, here's a tutorial:
