Hi all we are looking at getting a car suitable for 3 children and I was wonderin what the opinions where on this deal. It suits our budget and i have heard good reports on the Touran regarding practicality. We have a seat leon to part exchange (2002) so any ideas on what i should expect to pay with this as part exchange for the Touran?

    al opinions and advice welcomed

The cloth seats would be a nightmare with 3 kids, have a look around for one with leather.

I'd say there aren't too many around with leather

I'd say you should probably start them off in a Yaris or Micra and let them work their way up. ;)

No mention of air conditioning either, a must in a car with that much glass imo. Also €5k for one that is almost 10 years old seems expensive to me.
A 2004 for not alot more here:
    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=21813414043149120

    Or a 2005 Zafira for under €5k:

hi all, thanks for feedback so far. regarding the year, im not to worried about it as the mileage isn't that high at 55k miles... the car will be used as the daily run around for the kids usually on short trips s we are looking primarily at something that is reliable and has the room for buggies etc... and the tourans have come recommended. We are going for a viewing is there anything i should ask regarding work that has been done... shouldnt the timing belt have been changed close to this mileage and also should I be worried about the fact its had 3 owners?
    thanks a million

Should base on the condition of the car and not the number on the numberplate.

Zafira is a horrible yoke, I'd much prefer the Touran and I don't really like VAG's..

If you are going to buy do a motorcheck or cartell check.

Check to see is there service history to get an idea if mileage correct,
check paint is consistant no bubbles or rough patches,
check panels match up with each other,
check wear on seats, steering wheel, pedals just make sure not badly worn as this would indicate bigger mileage.

Also all cars 10 years or older now have nct every year.

The rear bumber has a bit of damage

Looks like a good car low miles best of luck

    Timing belt usually around 60000

change the belt at 60k along with tensioners and water pump. check the car doesn't use oil. (blue smoke from exhaust is the biggest dead give away) the problems with 1.6 and 1.4 vw engines using oil are well documented here and all over the net.

excuse the ignorance but can you explain what you mean about using oil?
    :o
and would i be rude asking for the belt to be changed before I comitted to purchasing?

I'm not basing anything on the year of the car though, I am just giving the OP other alternatives for his €5k. It could be argued that the reason the Touran is so expensive is that it wears a VW badge and the Zafira doesn't. Imo the Touran does nothing spectacular over the Zafira to warranty the premium irrespective of the condition of either.

its never rude to ask, if you are gonna buy it tell him its the only thing stopping you, he might do it or give you a better deal.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Hi all we are looking at getting a car suitable for 3 children

I'm not sure why people started buying brutal MPV style cars like an Opel Zafira or a Hyundai Trajet. Horribly basic and spartan cars!

I have 3 young children and contrary to public belief, the five of us (plus buggies and loads of stuff) fit very well in any large saloon or hatch. Think BMW 5-series, Mercedes E-class, Saab 9-5, etc.

Out of curiosity which of those cars you mentioned do you own and can you get a double buggy, enough bags and toys for a weekend away for two adults and three under 4's into the boot? The inlaws have a 2005 e320cdi and it's a fine car but certainly not as family friendly as our Zafira GSi.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,337 ✭✭✭positivenote

have to say that my current car is a 5 series 2001 and it will struggle to get the 3 kids seats in the rear. it does have a decent sized boot though...

If you have no more than 5 in the car at any one time, consider an Estate version of the above mentioned cars.

It's true you can get by, but it's a great bonus to have the option to carry your kids pals or other family members, which becomes inevitable as they get older.

A lot of estates won't fit 3 seats in the back, also the high roofline makes loading kids easier, also you have the lofty driving position and the occasional seating in the boot should you need it

i mean burning oil. if there is any blue smoke coming from the exhaust, especially when starting from cold or under hard acceleration, its a sign that oil is being burned.

more generally, when viewing the car, if something seems like its wrong then it probably is. don't be afraid to point stuff out and ask questions.

you definitely would not be rude to ask for the belt to be done before you buy. if they wont do the belt then use it as an excuse to haggle an extra few hundred quid off. you'd be looking at about €300 odd to have the belt done.

thanks for the replies so far guys, going to see the car in the morning but just came across this one here...
http://www.ooyyo.ie/car-detail/?language=34&domain=16&make=Volkswagen&model=Touran&trim=1.6&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.carsireland.ie%2Fdetail.php%3Fad_id%3D793098%26r%3Ds.php%253Fm%253D93%2526g%253D19 it is a year older and id like any opinions on which is the better value?
we are also thinking of looking at a zafira, but they dont seem to be getting as good reviews as the touran for our purposes.
    Thanks

In my humble opinion, a lot of the stuff at that dealer used to sell that isn't fairly new ex fleet was rough auction fodder cleaned up.
Same crowd as on Prussia street?

Is there some connection with that 'jap cars' place with the same address?

    Might be miles off...

    hi OP

You should also have a look at this Golf estate. 2002 1.4 Petrol 1 owner.

Cheaper to buy and cheaper to Tax. It has a massive boot also.

    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=14613400373261680

The touran you posted has higher tax and the alloys on it are off and Audi A4.?

This is not bad if your budget would stretch..
http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=913275069298000 E330 TAX PER YEAR same space as Touran nearly

I've owned several big cars, our current family car is a Saab 9-5. It has one of the biggest boots of any saloon car. If you need more space, try a big estate car. If you need more than 5 seats, you're fukced and damned forever to horrible yokes like your Zafira :)

Really, even bigger than an octavia? My horrible Zafira would make a show of your 9-5 tbh. Full recaro interior, 2.0 turbo, rr'd proven 190 bhp now unless you have a Saab hot aero or viggen then you would be gettin embarrassed pretty quickly by my horrible Zafira.

One thing you can say about the Zafira is that it rides quite well, oh wait....

€3500 for a 10 year 1.4 Golf estate is mental money also.

I think you need something with 3 seats in the middle not 2.5 the zafira touran etc have 2.5. S-max renault scenic or grand scenic or a citroen c4 grand Picasso.

Have S-max myself and fitting 2 booster seats and a baby seat is a breeze with 3 seats that move individually of each other. Also no 4 is due TODAY! so the eldest will be going into the back row which is rarely used. Boot space on all these models is brilliant with the back row folded down. We find plenty room on the floor behind driver and passenger seats also for journeys.

In relation to the seat Leon as long as its in good nick id be offering 4k with seat and timing belt done or 3,500 with the car if the belt is already done

    MAJOR EDIT.

sorry looks like the touran does have the 3 which is invaluable

    hi all,
had a look at the touran today and it wasnt the cleanest and was full of 'surface' damage as well as a mysterious clicking noise. all things considered we have looked at xsara picasso... it seems to have the three seats in the back like the touran and we seem to be able to get younger models for cheaper. Has anyone any feedback/opinions on this one

sorry guys in addition we have also come across this toyota which also seems like a good deal:

the picassos are great cars but there's a few things to watch out for.
check for oil leaks from the cylinder head, front of the engine near the drivers side. if its got a leak there it's a head gasket needed to sort properly. timing belt change is recommended at 60k. check that absolutely everything electric is working, particularly the a/c and central locking. good to see the original shopping cart in the boot, its usually missing. a full history is a good sign too. only 5 seats but massive boot.

as regards the verso. its got 2 extra seats and a few nice extras (alloys, fogs etc) but its also 2 grand dearer for a car 2 years older. and its a toyota so it'll be reliable.

for me it would be the picasso, its a lot of car for the money but since i work for a citroen dealer, im a bit biased.
