Is anyone from here applying for this? I didn't get in this year, so I'm hoping to get onto this Foundation course. I'm kind of glad I didn't get into the Commerce course, I doubt I would have been ready for it. Anyone else applying for it?

    Anyone do this course?

Would be interested in hearing what it's like, and has it helped you get a place into the degree course you wanted.

It is a pretty simple course. Involves 3 to 5 hours a week. If you pass the three modules, you will be guaranteed entry to commerce. Other courses, I'm not too sure. It will help you ease your way into the university and will get you ready for a full-time course.
I think the final application date is today the 31 July. So get applying or talking to the mature students officer.

Did you do the course? Sounds handy enough, have applied to do it as it would help if I got accepted next year in what to expect and such.

Just wondering is there anyone else who has applied for this course too?

Yeah I've done the foundation course. It does help if you have been out of education for a few years. It helps to ease you back into it. The lecturers understand that you have been out of education and are extremely helpful. It comprises of economics, accounting and maths. The subject matter in each module will give you a good grounding in these subjects for first year commerce. And if you pass all three you will be guaranteed a place in commerce in first year. You can also apply for other business courses but these won't be guaranteed. And you will get to know your class mates also. Most of us who done the course together are still friendly with each other now.

Did you go on to do commerce? If so, how are you finding it? I've applied for the foundation course so hopefully I will get a place on it there is only 45 places on the course though, but I did apply for commerce last year..

I am doing the commerce course now. Just finished first year. The course, so far, is pretty straight forward. It is a very broad course and in third year students can take a specific stream of interest. Have you spoken to the mature students officer? She might be able to give you an indication on whether your application will be successful or not. When I applied for the course, I applied online. I only got confirmation that I had a place one day before the course was due to start. Most other people on the course had went to open evenings and met the mature student officer at these. Therefore I would suggest meeting her in the college and talking with her about the course. If she sees your determination to do commerce, it might help in your application.

Yeah I've talked to her through email only, I've sent her quite a few and she has replied with details of what to do. She sent me out an application form when my application for commerce wasn't successful so I filled it out and sent along other info. I can't actually meet her in the college as I'm 220km from Galway :D and would need a little bit more notice than the day before, to sort out accommodation and that. When did most people find out they got onto the foundation course was it the day before like you? Cheers for the replies and info, here's to hoping .....

Not sure about most people. I was in the same situation as yourself. I was living in Waterford when I applied and had emailed the mature student officer about the course. She sent out an application which I filled and sent back. I didn't hear anything then until the day before the course was due to start. I just booked a B&B for the first couple of weeks until I had accommodation sorted. I'd book the B&B for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and travel back on a Friday. The course was on from 7-10 on a Tuesday evening and 7-9 on a Thursday evening. In September/October there was pretty good deals on B&B's. I got a lovely B&B for around 25 euro a night.
I will be chatting to a few people in the middle of next week who I completed the course with and I'll ask them about the time they got their acceptance letters.

Just got an acceptance letter today so delighted with that. Will have to try sort out accommodation now is all. If you could send me the names of a few b&b's around that are good price until I get somewhere of my own sorted it would be great :)

    Congrats on the acceptance.:)
The two B&Bs I used were Amber Lodge and Galway Budget Accommodation. Addresses are 26a and 26b College Road, Galway City. I think they are run by the same people. About a five minute walk from Eyre Square and 20 minutes from the college. Phone number is 091 566 986.
If you can't get these, you should try a few different sites online. Booking.com is one. You should find some well priced ones on these sites. Some will be crazily priced but don't mind them, there is some good value ones if you just look around.
When is the course starting? If you have plenty of time you could start looking for a room now! Might be a little more difficult when the year gets fully started. And you might be better off looking for a place with people who work or are the same age range or older. The younger first years are sound but they will keep you up all night partying!
    Have you checked on Daft?

I don't mind the all night partying, 24 and ready to rock it out of it :) Although money will be tight so I just want to knuckle down for the first few months and get settled in. Cheers for all your help :) I've checked on Daft, doesn't seem to be much. Would much prefer a cheap b&b for a while to get the suss on the place and figure out what i'm at, and then meet people who are in a similar situation and we could maybe get a place together then or something along those lines. Orientation is 15th of Sept. so I don't have to be up there until then. I'm going to start looking for places today and try get a deal for the first month or two i'm up there maybe.

Also have you an e-mail address for the two places mentioned? Would be of great help thanking you.
