Gone too late for kale now, so turnips or rape are options. Seen a bit about a kale rape mix but don't know much about it though.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Rape is about the best option, I am thinking of planting some myself. I have a 3 acre paddock that needs to be reseeded so I was thinking of spraying it off, discing it and broadcasting the seed.I think it is set at 4kg's/acre. I going to spread slurry before discing and add a bit of nitrogen. Might till in a bag- a bag and a half of urea depending on the weather when the slurry is spread.I will use some 10-10-20 to broadcast the seed.

Steago is the prefered variety at present.

Been looking into this myself lately stubble turnips or forage rape seem to be the best
been thinking of turnips myself as the grazing seems to last longer but have been told
they are not as palatable for cows! Going to see a lad this week who has grown both and
get his advice! Planning to power harrow some stubble ground and just broadcast
    mixed with fertliser!!

Interval forage rape is one of the best options available. Hybrid variety and going quite well I believe.

Too late for kale and turnip.

a neighbour of mine grows barley/oats and makes it into silage.he then puts in a crop of rape but 2 years ago the barley went a little strong and he lost some heads in the baling.he then just harrowed the field and set his rape.but barley came with the rape and by november he had a fine crop of barley/ rape mix.he then decided to bale it as he thought the rape might come again but not long after he baled we got snow so he was lucky he baled it as the rape would have been burnt in the frost.when he went to sell his cattle in the mart, everyone who saw them said they must have got a pile of ration but they didnt get a bit only this stuff and the barley bales.maybe it might suit someone this year as ration is looking dear and silage is poor and a few stone of barley dosent cost much

yes they can all be planted until november if you like but you crop will be reduced in quanity and it is in the last 2-3 weeks that any of these crops bulk up. A crop planted in early Aug will have way more feed that one planted in early september.

One issue with turnips if you are feeding to stores if that if any are loosing there teeth they may struggle on the crop.

Also on an earlier post I saw a reccomendation for useing barley, beware you cannot graze barley if the heads form, if you intend grazing use oats.

not knocking winter forage but are people not fearfull of the weather and having stock swimming in muck, going by the summer we are having anyway, or is everyone that has sown it in the past going to keep it up

Yes it is a risk but people know their own situations best.
