    Hi,

my grandad is into r/c boats and I'm thinking I might get him a new one for his birthday, I saw some r/c one that take petrol too, are they as good as they look?
And what website can you recommend that will send the boat to Ireland, I've only found American ones that don't post here or else a few UK ones but they were pretty crappy sites with not much choice.

    Thx

Speaking as a model collector, dont just buy him one out of the blue. Ask him what ones he would like, maybe even get him to order it, but you just pay for it.

It wont exactly be a surprise when it arrives, but its better than buying something that he may not like, is crap or hasnt got the gear to run.

Well, he's got 2 already and they are something like this
    http://www.modelzone.co.uk/radio-control-rc/boats/electric/remote-control-tug-boat-southampton.html

...and he's said before that he doesn't like the speed boat models, he prefers something that's "a bit more classic looking" (his words)

Altho, I was browsing and saw a r/c plane that lands on water...looked pretty cool but he probably wouldn't be into it.

I agree with wobbles on this one. I race model cars and fly model helicopters, both electric.
If someone went out and bought me somthing i would have to pretend im delighted and a few months later tell them about an awful crash i had (when it was really up on adverts.ie)

A modeller likes specific things, and you need far more information before you buy somthing like this.
For example, I like electric helicopters that i build myself and set it up myself and decide what electronic components i would prefer to use. If someone bought me some ready to fly "toy", i really wouldnt be too excited.

:rolleyes: mother of god, all I asked for was a decent website that someone could recommend where I could buy an r/c boat.
Really helpful there lads, thanks *slowclap :P

He's not a collector, he only has two so far (which he didn't build) and he goes to some pond somewhere with a mate of his and his grandson and they mess about with their toy boats in the water.

I started out with the r/c Lifeboat Severn Model radio control boat 3 years ago.
Then that capsized and the motor and electronics were destroyed.
Then I bought an r/c boat from an Irish Website two years ago.
I used it in conjunction with a thumbcam to make one youtube movie of the thing in action on Blessington lake. I then gave this boat away because I did'nt like it.
Now I have a NIKKO Sea Astro - I bought that in TOYMASTER of Mary Street.
Not a bad model at all.

    Well, Everyman to his own.

If he said that he particularly likes classic boats then either the Aeronaut Classic or Diva would probably appeal.

They are both self build boats and are made from nice mahogany veneered wood that looks nice in clear varnish. So nice about half of the builders that do them never put them in the water but decide to have them as coffee table art instead.

You have to build these if you want one. It takes about 2 weeks of occasional build sessions. Aeronaut do bigger versions calles Princess and Queen. http://www.greenhobbymodel.com/electric_boat_kits.html
They are similar to the boats shown at the resort in the film Godfather 2.

For a pre-made alternative you could google something called a Riva Aquarama, which is a high end model and might also be interesting.

This one above is from the maker Amati who specialize in good looking models too. And is also a building project.

But you might find a finished one for sale, or an asian premade copy possibly if you search enough.
