Hi I am hoping someone can advise on what to do:

I passed my driving test in Dublin, I can drive but not good at parking, nervous in heavy traffic and changing lanes.

Is there anyone who gives lessons to help build up experience / confidence with city driving?

    Thanks

    Lily

I think your own practice should suffice. Just because people pass their test doesn't mean they automatically build up this confidence (although it helps). you obviously know how to drive and are aware of the methods in doing so as well as the rules of the road otherwise you wouldn't have passed. Just jump in the car and drive around, get confident, take someone with you if it makes you comfier. It took me a while before I could take on Dublin City Centre even well after I passed my exam. I'm probably still cack at parking but so what. Your confidence will grow around it. Well done on passing and welcome to the world of the pink :)

Thanks for message but practicing myself is getting me no where and I dont want to have to rely on other peopleme to be in car with . I really think I need some form of lessons or professional to help. I find this so frustrating as I can drive but not on my own due to lack of confidence and I am afraid I will be in accident:(

If you a bit nervous driving then have a few lessons. It help build up your confidence though experience and practise helps with confidence. It be worth getting lessons for motorway driving anyway.

Just because you managed to pass a test on a route you've practiced on many times doesn't mean that you can drive anywhere. Many companies required fleet drivers do extra training and some require them to do advanced training.

OP go back to your ADI, or call any local, and get some more lessons. The fact that you realise that you need more training shows that you are already a better road user than most.

Driving is a constant learning, the better the training the quicker you improve.

It's a good thing she's not applying to be a fleet driver so.

Why don't you just call up a few driving schools, tell them what you need and see what they say? I imagine that has to be someone out there who can help you. Book one session at a time, and if you don't feel at ease with that person, move on to someone else.

My niece has a physical disability that makes her very nervous behind the wheel of a car. Her father didn't help when she was learning to drive. He'd just lose his head with her, and shout at her to just get on with it. Her resulting nerves made her a bad driver in ways that had nothing to do with her actual driving. She was a different person when she started taking lessons from a trained professional who was able to calm her down, and tell her what to do in a relaxed, professional and instructive manner. It worked wonders for her. It won't always happen just by itself with time and practice. Everyone is different.

Hi Lily...congratulations! Yes I would def get a couple of lessons, you'll probably surprise yourself now you have passed your test at least that pressure is off so you will prob take a lot more in now as you're not bricking at the thought of the test now...I have the pleasure of that imminently approaching!! Are you still based in Dublin? If so what part? I have a good instructor and he's sound and very easy going but very professional and he's told me he has his students come to him to get some motorway lessons after they pass at times. If you want his number I can PM it. If you're not based in Dublin any more, well...I'd say just try find someone good that someone recommends you. best of luck - B

It doesn't matter if she's a fleet driver or a novice.

All that they have done is passed a test , a relatively easy one TBH, done on urban roads at 50 or 60 km/h with little traffic around. How this is supposed to prepare you for motorways, parking, night, rain etc is a joke. The fact that they aren't confident driving also shows how little the test actually prepares drivers for our roads.

Thanks for all the advise. I am definately going to get some additonal lessons and hopefully that will help with building up confidence!

    Hi

first of all , congrats!! :)

i just passed my test yesterday, and am also feeling a bit nervous. grand on the familiar roads, but if i'm going somewhere that im not familiar i get a bit nervous. heres my plan, google map anywhere you're going that you're not familiar, just so you know exactly what route you're going to take and what to expect, and i've also booked two further lessons(both two hours long) with my instructor, one for just general drive, and one on the motorway...

hopefully with all that i'll be grand for me,

the main thing is , dont worry, you're not the only one, a couple of lessons and advance planning of journeys and you'll be confidently cruising in no time :)

Fair play to you OP for taking the initiative to continue developing your driving skills. The country could do with more people taking your approach.
