New job - think I was too hasty!! :(

I started a new job today....now I know it's the first day and I'll sound like an eejit but I really feel like I've made a HUGE HUGE mistake accepting it! :(. This was the first thing I applied for and was hired within 24hours. I felt pressured to take the job in case I was left unemployed for months and months on the dole if I didn't take it so took a step back both in salary and position for the sake of having a job.
If I apply for other jobs how do I explain wanting to leave a job I've only just started - it's going to make me look like a time waster? :(

    Any advice?

Don't mention this new job on your CV.

Be honest, state exactly as you said above, you took job as you didn't want to be on dole. Explain you felt you had something to offer the company even though it wasnt the ideal job for you. Don't critise the company you are with now, that's a big no no.

Also you cant leave it off cv as your social welfare dates won't match, also Ireland is a small country and HR departments are linked in many networks so you could easily get caught out.

It is not uncommon, employers will understand.

Of course you can leave it off your CV: an employer will know nothing about your social welfare dates (or indeed if you're eligible for the dole or not). When you get a better job, you just don't give them your P45 - contact Revenue and explain to them, and they'll happily sort it out.

By leaving it off the CV, you are NOT lying: you are just acknowledging that it's a stop-gap until you find a more appropriate job. Worst case, it might turn into a several month stop-gap, in which case you might list it. Best case, you'll get a better offer later this week!

It's only lying if you deny that you're working there.

Thanks for the replies guys! So do I acknowledge that I'm there at all if I do get a call back eg when I'm arranging interviews (which I'll hopefully get)? Apart from the work itself the hours and location don't suit me at all - I'll be home 2 hours later than my last job which in all honestly means more to me than anything else and is what's breaking my heart thinking about. I don't even think I'll be able to take any time off for interviews since I'm only in the door! I could get by without the dole if I needed to (haven't touched my redunudancy) and it'd be easier to arrange interviews etc if I was free...but at the same time I know giving up a paying job would be stupid!

Yep I stupidly signed off on Sunday evening all proud of myself lol!

I've seen a position in my dream company so going to apply this evening..God I hope i get an interview! I'll have to figure out what to say about the current situation though - either say nothing or be up front and explain I took the job to get of the dole but the hours/location aren't as suitable/workable as I thought they'd be - i'd prefer to be up front. This other place though is my DREAM company to work for the company's name/reputation, it's size, location everything so hopefully I get a shot at it - My favourite thing about my old job was working with their products so I'd love to do it full time!! Sad I know lol :)

Just applied there :D - I really hope I at least get an interview!!! It's in the perfect location and is exactly the area of IT I want to be in (antivirus/security etc) - I've already been accepted to a springboard masters in security/digital forensics close to the company in question so it'd be perfect to do both. I mentioned the course in my cover letter too as it's relevant. If I stay in the current job I'll have to miss out on the masters as I can't get to the college on time :(

I haven't put the current place on my CV cos I've only been there 2 days and I'm not quite sure what it's officially supposed to entail tbh (not what I thought anyways!) so can't really write it up if that makes sense? - but if I get a call I'll be upfront and tell them about it.

O no! Not to worry! Sure as they say it's easier to find a job when you already have one. Maybe the job will get better? Best of luck in applying for new jobs!

O Tk123 don't miss out on masters if at all possible. Are fees free? If so definitely do it as they are so expensive! I had to defer mine till 2013 as it is so pricey. If the worst came to the worst if you quit your dole will be disqualified for 9 weeks.

Well I did round 1 today - 2 techy tests!! The first was written and there was some questions I had no idea of and others I had to bluff my way thru. The second test was practical - 5 problems you had to solve on a pc with virtual machines on it etc. I did a lot better in the practical ones - well i think i did lol! :D The place itself is lovely - exactly the environment I want to be in but going by the written test I may have ruined my chances :( Should find out at the end of the week anyways..

That's brilliant! Well done. How did you manage to get the day off work?

Didn't get it :( (had 2nd round yesterday). Gutted is an understatement. He said there was a position coming up that I'd be more suited to so they'd 'get me next time' - don't know if he was just saying it to make me feel better. At least I heard back quickly and had good feedback I suppose.
