Unscrupulous Landlord

Does any body know if there is such a thing as a blacklist for bad landlords? The reason why I'm asking this is because recently I've had extreme difficultly in getting back my deposit from a Landlord who has two houses in Deerpark Cork City (Nos. <snip>). After some background research I found out through friends of friends and other associates that this same guy has repeatedly tried to screw his tenants for their deposits for the last number of years. On many occasions he has not paid the tenants back their deposit until threatened with solicitors letters or through cases made by Threshold. Yet year on year this guy tries the same old dirty tricks. He often rents his properties through letting agents which act as a third party, his favourite trick is to demand that the letting agent/tenants hand over the deposit to him at the beginning of the lease and when it comes to paying it back he goes missing, doesn't answer phone calls for weeks, makes up excuses that he's having money problems and tries to claim exorbitant cleaning costs even though the property is left clean and tidy. From the information which I have received through a number of different sources this landlord continues to try and trick his tenants out of their deposit year on year and it appears that he gets away with this unscrupulous behaviour every time. For the sake of future unsuspecting tenants I would like to name this landlord and the rental properties which he owns for being repeatedly unfair and unjust with his tenants so that they can avoid the time consuming hassle and financial hardship. Does anybody know of a suitable forum for naming and shaming bad landlords?

If you read this forum regularly, you will see that this is fairly usual behaviour, sadly. We need a third party holding system..

This is why so many stop the last month's rent in desperation. Maybe report him to PTRB for a start?

Don't, we don't want to be part of your defamation action. Don't identify people like this, but if you must, go do on your own blog.

Now that is a great idea.. Blogs are free and folk can add names.. watch out for legal flak though!

Which is why it's a very bad idea, due to libel laws. Unless of course, the OP has the money to pay his barrister's bill.

On a serious note. OP - send a solicitor's letter. Be prepared to follow it up with court action via small claims if landlord doesn't comply...

Exactly so,, there is no emoticon for tongue-in-cheek.

But we should not have to go through all that hassle, hence the Threshold campaign for a third party deposit holder.

I once bumped into a ll who owed me a deposit in town and escorted her to the cash machine.. took many months to get the balance off her but ut was a start..

I think we definitely need a third party deposit holding system! They have this in the UK and it seems to work quite well. It would protect decent landlords and tenants alike. Is there a lobby group for such a system?

Of course; but it made me chuckle imagining the reaction of past landlords to that scenario... WIth my disabiliities impossible anyways..

    Pro Tip.

If you are concerned about a prospective landlord you can use this search to find if they have had any dealings with PRTB hearings

You clearly aren't aware of how defamation works.

You should inform yourself of this if you're a moderator on a site like this.

I'm not getting into the discussion of the niceties of defamation actions. My concern is that boards.ie isn't drawn into a dispute between the poster and their landlord.
