    Hi I've been offered a Nissan 350gt skyline 2006 for 6500.
Looks like a great car, currently have a 320DZ.I don't put up much milage but just looking for a cost comparison fuel consumption, insurance, tax,I'm 32 male no claims etc.
Opinions on the car would be welcome,I haven't driven it yet so nothing to compare to it.

then again he is nissan doctor, so he have seen a few of skylines naked, so he can tell you even more then you expect! :D

What colour is it? There are very few 06's(facelift model) in Ireland.

I got one in 08 and had it 3 odd years. The fuel consumption, of course, depends on how you drive it but motorway cruising can actually return very good mpg. Standard service parts are easily available here and more substantial parts are very easy to source cheaply in the US(the Infinity G35 is identical).

The 6 speed manuals are better(and more powerfull) although the clutches are a bit weak. Aside from that there have been a few window reg failures and that' about it.

My insurance was less then €800 fully comp at 30 but when looking for quotes you have to just say Nissan 350gt, leave out the skyline bit as the companies don't have it listed and won't quote.

Tax is cc based so will be €1683 a year at today's rates.

    My old one:

That looks great! Do you miss it ND? Did it become too impractical?

I do miss it but believe it or not, if I could have any of my Skylines back, it wouldn't be this one.

I started a daily commute of 150odd kms so a 3.5 V6 was never going to work and I couldn't justify the tax for a weekend car.

It's a light blue skyline with Dublin plates,he said he took it originally in from the UK 2 yrs ago.
I am not getting to see it until the weekend, with the increase in tax and insurance from where I am right now it's the guts of 1500 more plus the fuel costs this will be a hard sell to the missis as she was looking to get a jeep for the dogs.
How temperamental are they as I have had no probs with the 320 and I never had a Nissan so far.

They wouldn't be temperamental at all, dare I say they would have less reliability issues then most modern BMW's. Their interior spec, fit and finish is easily on par with the Germans. They will be hard to sell, as any large engined petrol car is here these days, but at the prices they are going for now, its hard to find something comparable IMO.

Is it a blue one with a bodykit fitted?

Have to jump in here and ask what the above car is?

Never heard of one and when I google image it ND's Skyline comes up because of this thread!

Ah now, come on out of that.
It's got to be a typo. Just get rid of the Z and remember, we're in Ireland.

Well that's a will guess, but I'm my opinion the reason he would not get it again ( for me too ) as its not technically a skyline.
Don't understand me wrong, it's a lovely car, but it's not what skylines were ment to be. It's lixuriuos and comfortable and has a wrong engine too.

Whoops! I presumed it was some form of Nissan! Can't really be blamed as most Nissans can be called some name or another like that!

But the Skyline started off life as a luxury car.

That was Lamborghini I think, Porsche started off as a Beetle. Looks wise I think it's hard to beat the R32 and R33 Skyline I think.

You might be right. I was doubting a wee bit after I posted. Thought still, it makes the point clear. :)

R32 my favourite body. Someday I'll get back in to skyline again and that will be r32

After owning one now, nothing feels that good anymore :(. I so miss it. More and more with each day.
It's a smug thing to say, but skylines have a soul and character that other cars can't really match. I love scoobie and it is fantastic car, but skyline was skyline. :)

My point was that depending on who you are, you might see Skylines as a luxury car or a sports car. Some may approve of the approach of the 350 GT and others disapprove. But the Skyline has never been exclusively a sports car.

I agree with you anyway in that I prefer the R32 - R34 Skylines.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,718 ✭✭✭Matt Simis

He has a point though. Shamelessly stolen from the Wiki page, but it sums it up perfectly:
The V35 broke with Skyline tradition. There was no straight-6, no turbo, and no GT-R, a decision which extended to all later Skylines. The intention had been for the model to use a different name, a decision reversed by Renault/Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn.[31] who choose to gear the V35 towards the luxury-sport market. Billing the 350Z as a pure sports car, Nissan put a slightly more powerful VQ35DE in the 350Z, and while the Skyline and the 350Z shared the same platform, the 350Z had additional bracing, under-body aero parts, and weighed 100 kg less.[5]

It was never developed as a Skyline or intended to be called one. By some standards, the 350z is more a Skyline than the G35. I had the newest Infinity version for a week in the US (G37 Sedan) and the thing was in no way sporty or interesting. Nor did it look as as nice as ND's G35 Coupe.

I never felt anything like that driving a Skyline, never really saw any sign of soul or anything like that. They are quick but they still feel like generic white goods (albeit fast ones!)

Each to its own. For some people Alfa has soul and character, where I only see a collection of plastic, glass and metal, which can't even stay together for longer then 5 minutes :P.
For me skyline has more character then 99% of stuff on the road. All down to preferences and taste!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,721 ✭✭✭✭CianRyan

    Yeah, I'd be the same.
I look at an RB powered Skyline and it's more than just a car. Even without driving one I can feel it's presence and character.
That's not something I can say for a lot of cars that people constantly talk about having character. Take the Alfa GT, it's evokes nothing for me, or an M3. To me they just seem like great lumps of well engineered metal and that's it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,289 ✭✭✭Veloce

Is it the same 3.5 V6 that is used in the Skyline and the 350z?

If so ND, just out of interest what is the power delivery like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,721 ✭✭✭✭CianRyan

The last run of 350Z's had a different engine, a VQ35HR with just north of 300BHP, all the previous ones had a VQ35DE with varying amounts of power.
AFAIK, the 350GT only had a VQ35DE for the 3.5L.
That generation Skyline also had VQ25DD/VQ30DD but obviously, these weren't 350GT's. :)

either way they would be nippy enough, but their a big car compared to a competition in class ( maybe my perception alone ? )

OP just wants a nice low mile cruiser, something different, this ticks all the boxs.

To those saying the V series Skylines are not 'real' skylines, its certainly an argument I've heard endless times. While they are certainly a completely different animal to the previous R31-R34 generations of straight 6 skylines, its still badged as a skyline in every market bar north America and, on paper, the 350gt is more powerful then any previous production skyline(being that, on paper, Nissan quoted all GTR's as 276hp).

Lets not forget that only 4 out of the 16 generations of Skyline have had RB engines fitted so I don't consider having an RB engine as a criteria for being a 'real' Skyline. I adore the RB engine but times move on and the VQ/VR V6's are the latest high power Nissan engines and they are every bit as over engineered and tunable as the RB's.

    But what about the VK's?

Weren't you looking to drop a V8 into an S14 actually?
    Seems like the right fit?

The VK's are lazy under stressed V8's. For a road car I wouldn't be bothered, for drifting they work well due to bag of low end torque.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,721 ✭✭✭✭CianRyan

Makes sense since they're made for their pick ups.
For some reason I assumed the S14 was going to be a drift car, it just made sense to me as almost every other one out there is.

They didn't start out as a tractor mfr.......but they are "known" for them, btw......there again, we have one at home........ ;)

Correct ! And all because he was pissed off with his Ferraris eating clutches, and when his own (tractor) mechanic opened it up he found......Ferrari used the same clutch as he used in his tractors.......when he called Enzo about it, Enzo told him to "stick to building tractors..."..........at which point.......well, the rest, as they say, is history.

Must have killed Enzo to admit Lambo got it right by making the first mid-engined supercar......and then having to copy them for the rest of time.....

Well gtr's were 276hp, because they were force restricted by jap domestic market.
It only needs restriction taken off and there more hp then in travellers wet dream.

Surely new gtr is not using an rb engine, but the way I see it - it's a proper skyline. :)

They didn't even have restrictions. The 276hp limit thing was a 'gentlemans agreement' amongst the Japananese manufacturers but is was rubbish really. Both Skyline GTR's and Supra tt's made much more then that in real life, even without any mods.

I thought the Jap limit was pretty much hardset, without mods you cant go faster. The German 155 limit was [presumably purposely?] badly implemented, only kicking in top gear and pending model certain driving modes (S vs E etc). It seems slightly easier to work around. And Porsche didnt abide to it at all.
Every BMW and Mercedes driver receives a lifelong right to the fast lane along with the purchase price of the car. Other drivers are allowed to use the fast lane to pass cars if they must, but they must always defer to the true owners of the lane. In theory, this rule also applies to Porsches, but one rarely sees them on the road because they are driving so fast they become invisible. Audi drivers mistakenly think they have bought the right to the fast lane as well and try to intimidate all other cars off the road because they have BMW envy complexes

That's because the jap 112 mph limit is law imposed. The german 155 mph limit is a gentlemans agreement. There's no legal requirement.
