Can you swoop a left hand gear shift with right hand gear shift, fixing up old bike given to me, didn't really want to spend a lot on it, as its old,
right hand is broken ,left had OK, will use right hand one more, will leave front on second cog,
don't know anything about bikes ,haven't been on a bike for years!
    thanks
ps, need new brake cables/bits .best (cheapest place), halfords or local bike shop.

In general, I'd say "no" unless there's some particularly obscure shifting system I'm not familiar with.

If the left hand is a simple friction type rather than indexed, it will work with
    virtually anything.
