Why are Etihad not competing with Emirates?

I'm looking at some flights at the moment to Australia for Christmas. Etihad are about double the price of Emirates. Are they just hoping that Emirates will lose money on the route and leave?

I think it's a little more complicated than that tbh. Competing carriers don't always offer identical fares to the same destinations, I would imagine there are a number of reasons, passenger load perhaps, or maybe they just don't need to price match especially if it's a busy period.

EY/EK are in no way unique in acting like this, it's widespread.

I would have thought that Australia is an important source of business for the DUB -> DXB/AUH routes. It might be that the sales are coming through indirect channels. I believe my employer were offered discount through a travel agent to use Etihad only.

Emirates I believe are making alot of money on cargo on the route, both airlines don't exist in the real world however and are both loosing a ton of money and exist as a foreign policy tool of the Emiratis. Same with Qatar Airways.

I hadn't considered the cargo angle. Why is it better for the cargo to go to Dubai rather than Abu Dhabi?
