What does PRSI cover?

    Hi,
Since the changes to PRSI cover a coiuple of years ago I am somewhat confused as to what is covered and how that cover is accounter for. My understanding is that the examination is covered, nothing else, with the examination cost set at 33euro. However what is an "examination"?

My dentist charges 60euro to a clean and polish. Does that mean that the dentist is getting 93 euro (my 60 + PRSI 33), or should the PSRI portion be deducted from the 60 euro meaning that the actualy cost to me should be ~27euro? When I was at the dentist last year I did not fill out any PRSI claim form so I am not sure if the dentist is claiming the PRSI portion or not.

    Thanks

I'd also like to know this.

I am guessing, given by the lack of a sticky, that you are entitled to nothing (some information on citizensinformation.ie says that you cannot claim tax relief on anything considered 'routine' - not sure if same applies to PRSI).

I have been working full-time for the last two years (plenty part-time before that) but I have no idea what I am entitled to.

Am I better off annoying the dentist's secretary or trying to find out definitively beforehand?

An examination is an examination....extraoral(outside the mouth)- TMJ,lymph nodes, lips, salivary glands....&intraoral(inside the mouth)-tongue,palate,tonsils,inside of cheeks, tooth surfaces, fillings, gums). Basically your screening for oral cancer, decay& gum disease.
PRSI covers one dental examination a year, the PPS number can be sent in advance to check for approval, receptionist generally does this.

    Hi,
    Thank for the replies.

My confusion come from the fact that my dentist charges 60 euro for a clean and polish. When I ask about PRSI they say that that no longer covers any of this cost.

My wife went a different dentist last week who also charges 60 for a clean and polish. However they said afterwards that PRSI covers the examination part of the cost so she only had to pay ~30 euro.

Thus I am wonder if my original dentist is creaming it, or whether the 2nd dentist is not the norm.

    Thanks

    Many thanks for this.

    Will contact the receptionist.

It's not possible for a dentist to claim ANYthing outside the fee from the PRSI one checkup a year. If they send a claim for anything beyond a checkup (cleanings, fillings, ect), it would be declined automatically. Even if they send a claim in 363 days versus 365 days after the last checkup, that's declined. The whole thing is quite tightly regulated by government, & computerised- there is really no place for scamming the system.
The dentist your wife attended charged €30 for a cleaning, yours charged €60. It may be competition(different areas, different overheads), it may be that a less intensive cleaning was required.
