Looking at changing my car and want to go diesel. Have approx 5k, want to keep the CC to 1.6 at the most (tax) but this limits my choice in terms of diesels.

I'm thinking along the lines of a Focus TDCi or Peugeot 407, both of which are 1.6. Any other suggestions?

i'm not going to do you a one word reply, but SKODA's not a bad suggestion, but more detail would be benefcial to you!

bad idea.....the 1.6tdci foord/puig/cit psa unit is a rubbish troublesome engine. You'll be lucky not to find yourself with big bills and hassles buying a cheap one in your budget.
To be honest, you don't need to up your budget......up your CC !
buy a 1.8tdci focus (proper ford engine) ....or a 2.0tddi or tdci modeo, much better engines, and when you break down the tax, the difference is negligiable over the year v's what you could wind up paying in repair costs for a car with that sh1t 1.6 diesel engine!

otherwise, the only other small diesel engiine I would suggest to you in the skoda/vw 3 cylinder 1.4 unit.

Thanks, very informative. I really want to keep the yearly costs down. I only do about 5-6000 miles a year so maybe I don't need a diesel? I do mostly city driving and the odd jaunt up the country. I'll look into the skoda and maybe look at smaller CC petrols.

Focus 1.6 petrol - loads about.

I would be aiming for Ghia or Titanium spec as it makes the inteior a little nice.

I've done 5k in 3 months! You most certainly don't need a diesel!

What do you need out of a car? How many people does it need to carry and what sort of lifestyle have you got?

Ie. surfer, office worker, parent etc. etc.

I currently have a 98 mondeo 1.6 petrol, fairly banged up and heavy on petrol. I want something of a similar size, that will take golf clubs/luggage easily in the boot. It'd be for myself and the missus, with the possibility of kids in the coming years.

For petrol, I'm thinking saloon civic, focus, jetta, avensis, perferably 1.4. Thanks for all the advice.

    Dont think there is one!

And you dont want a 1.4 in those cars, they are all too heavy for a 1.4 they will be a pig on juice.

    Passat 1.6FSI

It might not set the world alight performance wise, but its a nice comfortable car for the money.

As above, they are also pretty good on petrol. With the mileage you are doing it is a better bet than a €5k Passat TDI which could give turbo, camshaft or flywheel trouble which will more than wipe out any fuel savings you might make.

The 1.6 focus and peugeot you mentioned have the same engine, as does a volvo s40. You'd be better off with the 1.8 diesel focus. And all Fords are sows on juice not just your mondeo, so a petrol focus will drink petrol too. But with that low mileage I would just focus on finding the most reliable motor.

5k miles a year is a small amount of driving, I really don't see why fuel consumption/engine size is a major influence in the OP'd decision. There is great value at present in petrol cars as all the sheeple want to buy diesels.

Only last week someone on here with similar criteria bought a nice 2007 Mazda 6 1.8 litre petrol for €5k from a garage. That is alot of car for the money imo and one of the most reliable cars you can get. If I was in the OP's shoes this what I would be looking out for if only doing 5k miles per year.

2 suggestions skoda octavia but older models are 1.9tdi if you really want a car that is less than 1.6 go with a renault megane 1.5dci. if buying a megane buy the newer model 2006 up as the model before that has a delphi fuel system absolute disaster ultimately when millage is high on them you have to change 4 injectors and pump at 1500 euro at least newer model doesn't have this trouble. either car is great on diesel. we have both a 2011 skoda octavia 1.6tdi and 2004 megane estate 1.5dci. The megane is going perfect other than the fuel system.
If you are looking for a really reliable car and don't mind paying the extra tax i would go for the octavia you really can't go wrong with them.

OP here. Having read all of the above it seems a low cc petrol or diesel would most suit me. As I said, don't do a huge amount of mileage so efficiency isn't my No 1 priority. I'm more interested in keeping the cost of yearly tax/insurance down. So, 1.6 would be the max. Like the idea of the Renault 1.5 DCi. There are lots of 1.4 petrol focuses out there. How about a 1.4 C4 e.g. http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3655742?

My head is spinning from all the choice

Avoid. The focus is too heavy of a car for the 80bhp unit they put into it. Either the 1.6 100/115bhp would be better suited.

Don't know much about Citroen's but the C4's aren't a bad looking car. Maybe see if you could find a better spec model. That blue one is a bog standard one.

Just as a note, my aunt had a 1.4 Focus for 5 years and just bought a 1.6 Focus hatch.

The 1.6 is much heavier on petrol and she only does small mileage! This is fact.
